‘Avatar’ and ‘Lincoln’ Production Designer Gets Oscars Replaced After Losing Them in L.A. Wildfires

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has reissued the two Oscars that were previously owned by renowned production designer Rick Carter, as they were unfortunately destroyed in the wildfires that occurred in Los Angeles earlier this year.

James Carter, who received two Academy Awards for his contributions to the films ‘Avatar’ in 2009 and ‘Lincoln’ in 2012, was one of many residents whose homes were devastated by wildfires that swept through Pacific Palisades and Altadena back in January.

On Monday, the Academy announced on its Instagram page that their CEO, Bill Kramer, handed over Carter’s replacement Oscars. The post stated, “Today, we were privileged to replace the Oscars that iconic production designer Rick Carter earned for AVATAR and LINCOLN – awards he sadly had to part with when this year’s LA fires devastated his home.

The new awards, introduced by CEO Bill Kramer, represent more than just what was lost. They pay tribute to a trailblazing artist whose filmmaking style has shaped the visual narrative of contemporary cinema, from the Americana depicted in FORREST GUMP to the tender expansiveness of THE FABELMANS. Rick doesn’t merely design sets; he constructs worlds that we continue to revisit time and again.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my feelings after watching Carter’s heartfelt message on the Academy’s Instagram Story. In his own words, he conveyed the profound significance of the moment: “My Oscars, regardless of their form, hold a special place in my heart. The absence of them was something I hadn’t truly felt since the fire, as I couldn’t let myself.

He added, “This is pretty special. I mean, more than pretty special.”

Apart from “Avatar” and “Lincoln,” Carter has also contributed as a production designer on several other films, such as “Back to the Future Part II” and “Part III,” “Jurassic Park,” “Forrest Gump,” “The Polar Express,” “Munich,” “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker,” and “The Fabelmans.” He received his first Oscar in 2010 for his exceptional work on “Avatar” under the category of best achievement in art direction, and he won his second in 2013 for “Lincoln” in the category of best achievement in production design.
