Enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating Elder Scrolls VI for quite a while now, but instead, Bethesda surprised everyone by unveiling the enhanced version of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – the Oblivion Remastered edition.
The game was released way back in 2006, which was before my time as a gamer. However, I believe this could be the title that ultimately persuades me to dive into the world of Elder Scrolls for the first time.
Oblivion to Skyrim
Many people found themselves immersed in open-world fantasy for the first time with Oblivion, and its successful reception laid the groundwork for the immense anticipation surrounding Skyrim’s release when it was announced. Frankly, I didn’t get to play Oblivion myself, but you could sense the palpable excitement among gamers online as they eagerly awaited the arrival of The Elder Scrolls V.
Even though Skyrim came out, I simply couldn’t get deeply involved in it. While my friends raved about creating diverse characters and races, I found myself more drawn to the engaging storylines found in games such as the Arkham series and The Last of Us, which focus on narrative enjoyment.
Lord Knows I Tried
In essence, playing Skyrim felt as though there was an overwhelming sense of expectation, causing me to initiate the game several times in an attempt to connect. However, my deepest immersion within its world has been achieved primarily through Unarmed Badass Viking Commentary videos by YouTuber Robbaz.
Instead of forever immersing myself in the game, it never truly captivated me, and I came to realize that open-world games simply don’t appeal to me. Frankly, managing my own life already requires most of my attention, and the idea of assuming the role of the Dragonborn in a vast fantasy world is an added responsibility I can do without. In simpler terms, I’d rather focus on my actual pile of laundry than a game-world one.
Can The Remaster be a Good Entry Point?

Ever since, I’ve maintained a safe distance from the Elder Scrolls series, yet it was no secret to me that the franchise is massive. When Elder Scrolls VI was unveiled, my enthusiasm for the upcoming game wasn’t a surprise to anyone who was looking forward to it as well.
As I continued to wait for further updates, Bethesda unexpectedly released their remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which they secretly developed. Upon comparing the graphics, it’s clear that the upgrade using Unreal Engine is nothing short of spectacular. Given the trend with modern remasters, I imagine the team at Virtuos made some additional adjustments to the gameplay and user interface to ensure a more contemporary experience for players.
Up until now, there’s been a strong sense of nostalgia permeating most responses, making it hard not to feel moved by the heartfelt stories shared by the developers at Bethesda as they reflect on the impact of the game on their lives and their enthusiasm for game development.
Considering that, perhaps now would be an ideal moment to give Elder Scrolls another try. Each Elder Scrolls game is crafted to serve as a starting point for novices, and the land of Tamriel offers plenty of room for exploration, allowing you to immerse yourself in adventures within just one region.
Because the Remastered edition encompasses all expansions added to Oblivion since its launch, some people argue that the $49.99 price point suggests over 500 hours of playable content – a claim seldom made about many upcoming modern games.
The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Remastered is now available for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5.
