Many gamers continue to fondly reminisce about the XBLA era on the Xbox 360. This period holds a special place in memory as it transpired during a time when digital gaming wasn’t yet ubiquitous, and Microsoft’s gaming brand was still distinctly recognizable.
Although traces of the original Xbox can be found, it seems as though this aspect of the company is seldom mentioned, perhaps appearing just a handful of times. However, one could also contend that the publisher’s shift towards digital gaming gained momentum during this period, given its significant success.
In the late 2000s and early 2010s, there was a period of uncertainty about the direction of gaming. Many developers believed that console gaming was nearing its end, and instead, mobile gaming would dominate. The success of games like Angry Birds and Cut The Rope led publishers to believe that all games should be available on smartphones.
Enter Xbox Live Arcade, often shortened to XBLA by fans of the period.
It was discovered that fans enjoyed playing short gaming sessions on consoles and mobile devices, which ultimately boosted the popularity of games such as Splosion Man, Bastion, Castle Crashers, Braid, and various others. These games were seen as a welcome change, particularly by those who found AAA titles from that era too monotonous with their brownish-grey tones.
XBLA gained immense popularity due to its offering of shorter games that featured classic gameplay styles. As players grew fond of these traditional mechanics, developers began reviving old franchises on this platform. Games like Mega Man 9 and 10, Sonic 4 Episodes 1 and 2, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and many others found a niche here.
At a specific period, Microsoft implemented a unique points system where gamers would purchase points to acquire games. Though this method was peculiar, it later gave way to transactions using actual money. Despite its eventual replacement, fans found charm in its novelty. Similarly, Nintendo employed a comparable points system for Wii, Wii U, and 3DS consoles, but these were also substituted with user-friendly real-money platforms over time.

The mix of large AAA games and smaller retro-style titles is what made the Xbox 360 stand out as the dominant console in its generation, the 7th. Although these games were available on PlayStation 3 as well, its focus was more about raw power, making their presence feel unusual. Compared to the PSN (PlayStation Network), the XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade) was more distinctive and memorable.
As indie games proliferated across various platforms, the unique appeal of XBLA diminished, and Microsoft has largely stopped using this branding. Furthermore, indie games have come to be strongly linked with portable devices such as the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, thus stripping Xbox of its traditional association with these types of games.
Currently, Xbox is strongly associated with its Game Pass service, whether positively or negatively. By opting to emulate Netflix in the gaming realm, they offer a vast library of games for users to play on either an annual or monthly basis. This all-you-can-play approach certainly offers convenience, but it lacks the unique appeal that comes from more traditional gaming methods.

Occasionally, I come across games such as Cuphead or Hi-Fi Rush, and it’s as if the vibrant essence of the Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) era is alive and well. This experimental phase, characterized by a blend of innovative visuals and classic gameplay, is undeniably missed by many gamers like myself.
Xbox will live just fine with Game Pass, but it felt alive with XBLA.
