Heed this notice: Reveals ahead for the third episode of Doctor Who season 15, titled “The Well.” This particular episode doesn’t mark the debut of its main antagonist in the series, but it delves deeper into the villain’s motivations, offering insights that have led to a compelling theory about its behavior. It transpires that “The Well” serves as an unexpected sequel to the 2008 episode “Midnight,” and reintroduces the monster that David Tennant came across in Doctor Who season 4, episode 10. This mysterious creature has undergone a transformation, but the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, successfully figures out it’s an unwelcome repeat encounter.
The essence of “Midnight” lies in what’s hidden and unspoken, much like “The Well.” Intriguingly, the Season 15 cast of “Doctor Who” kept the details about the “Midnight” monster under wraps. However, I believe I can shed light on a crucial behavioral trait of this creature now that Russell T. Davies has subtly developed the villain in “The Well.” The theory I propose could have been conceived as early as 2008, but it becomes more convincing to validate after the disclosed information in the 2025 sequel episode.
Doctor Who’s “Midnight” Monster Seems To Be A Carbon Parasite
Diamonds and carbon-based life are what the creature seems to be drawn to
On the enigmatic world known as Midnight, or Planet 6767 as depicted in “The Well”, resides a life form that has astonishingly adapted to thrive amidst the X-tonic light and galvanic radiation, conditions lethal to all other known life forms. Yet, survival by mere light is questionable, for it might not be essential for this mysterious creature. Instead, I believe its persistence hinges on something more fundamental – carbon. Remarkably, this planet is rich in diamonds, a form of carbon.
If there were no other life on Earth, the carbon found in diamonds could potentially serve as a source of nourishment. However, since various carbon-based lifeforms such as humans, Time Lords, and the Lombardic race exist – even in fictional universes like “The Well” – this scenario is unlikely. With that said, when the Crusader Tours vehicle happened to bring David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor and his fellow passengers near the monster, it might have perceived a potential food source and moved closer for investigation. Furthermore, it appears that this creature cannot survive independently outside of the diamond-rich planet’s surface and instead derives its energy from carbon-based beings when it comes into contact with them.
In the thrilling series “Midnight”, an individual on board the shuttle observes a shadowy figure seemingly “sprinting” towards the shuttle, which caused the protective shutters to be hastily closed once again. This suggests that the mysterious entity was highly agitated by the discovery of something novel and probably overjoyed upon detecting the carbon-rich environment inside the cabin. It appears that tormenting and controlling everyone served as a thrilling extra for this malevolent creature.
The Monster Emerging From The Well In Doctor Who Season 15 Makes Sense If It Needs Carbon To Survive
The “Midnight” entity was forced into the diamond mines to survive the planet’s drastic transformation
Over a span of 400,000 years, from when the planet was called Midnight to Planet 6767, significant changes occurred on its former radiant surface. The sun that once illuminated Midnight, now known as X-tonic, has since expired and crumbled into a dull star. Obliquely, “The Well” hints at the conflicts that transpired during this period, and the fact that all diamonds were mined from the planet’s surface. Given that the monster presumably requires carbon to survive, this could have placed it in a precarious situation. In the end, it was compelled to dwell beneath the ground to sustain itself.
The majority of the story “The Well” unfolds in a mining settlement on the planet 6767, which serves as a diamond mine since these precious stones are found five miles below the surface. Consequently, a mineshaft was constructed. Known for its diamonds, planet 6767 lacks anything else at the surface, making it the ideal habitat for this creature to survive. As the mining operation advanced towards the monster’s new dwelling, “The Well” suggests that the entity had already left the shaft while apparently amused. This could imply that it was elated to discover a fresh food source and began attacking the inhabitants of Lombardic colony.
The Monster’s Escape From Planet 6767 Makes It Trickier For The Doctor To Defeat It
The Doctor will need to find a more permanent solution next time it meets the “Midnight” monster
In “The Well,” character Fifteen confesses that “Midnight” was the most terrified moment in his existence, which could be due to the fact that as Ten, he barely escaped a perilous situation. If not for the hostess selflessly sacrificing herself to remove the entity and its host from the shuttle, it might have been Doctor who was inadvertently ejected instead. However, the Doctor likely viewed this as a compromise. Averting destruction is usually preferable for Time Lords, so he may have seen it as a minor triumph that he didn’t have to destroy the monster. Instead, it merely resurfaced on Midnight’s surface.
As I depart Planet 6767, I believe the monster has been driven back into its deep, diamond-laden mines. Unfortunately, just as I think we’ve won, a shocking twist unfolds – the villain managed to stow away on one of our team members! This means the danger will spread across the universe, causing destruction wherever it goes. Finding another place like Midnight, with its diamonds for the monster to feed on and nothing else, could be challenging. It seems that next time, I might have no choice but to eliminate this beast to protect those around me.
