Warning: SPOILERS for The Conners season 7, episodes 5-6.
In a simpler and more conversational style: Mark’s departure from the show “The Conners” wasn’t perfect, but it adds depth to the family’s ongoing storyline since 1988. Since Roseanne’s character died on “The Conners,” and the way her character was written off initially caused some controversy, there have been instances in the series that many fans might not have preferred. The final episode of “The Conners” also had its highs and lows.
As a devoted fan, saying goodbye to the incredible cast of The Conners after seven years has been a mix of sadness and warmth. For some of us, this journey started nearly four decades ago. The show was special because it resonated with many viewers who recognized themselves in a family fighting to get by financially, much like Roseanne did when it first aired. Over the years, The Conners has continued this tradition, keeping the theme of everyday struggles alive. In some ways, the recent challenges surrounding Mark’s departure underscore one of the series’ strongest aspects – its authentic portrayal of real life.
Mark Leaves For New York Ahead Of The Conners Finale
He Missed The Show’s Send-Off By A Single Episode
It’s hardly shocking that Mark’s storyline in The Conners season 7 started on a rocky note, given how the previous season ended. Jackie posed a significant threat to his hacking business even beforehand, but during the course of the new season, Mark fled home and accused Darlene of David’s disappearance when she questioned him about his hacking activities. This left many wondering how he would reappear and what the resolution might be.
After moving in with Dan, life became slightly less stressful for Mark. Although Dan didn’t fully agree, he found Mark’s work fascinating and even called it a kind of superpower. Dan started contemplating if Mark could utilize his abilities for good, which hinted at Mark’s future. Instead of betraying him as initially planned, Jackie leveraged her connections at the Lanford PD to secure Mark a job at a cybersecurity firm in New York City. However, there was one condition – he had to depart just an episode prior to the series finale.
Despite wrapping up his narrative with an uplifting twist, heading off to chase a significant new venture, it was equally hard for fans not to witness him bidding farewell to the entire family. The goodbye dinner they held for him is entirely omitted from the screen, and his early departure prevented him from participating in the last two emotionally charged family gatherings of the series. However, while it seemed like a massive void left by Mark was palpable in the final scene of The Conners, there were also advantages to his unexpected exit.
The Conners Was Great Because It Teaches Gratitude In The Face Of Disappointment
It Never Mattered How Little They Had As Long As They Had Family
It turned out beneficial for Mark’s character when he departed the series prematurely in one sense. His heartfelt goodbye with Darlene was one of the most poignant moments in the final season of The Conners. At first, Darlene had been so upset about his relocation that she missed his going-away dinner, but eventually, Mark clarified that he wouldn’t have been able to survive on his own so far away if not for Darlene’s guidance in preparing him for life. Even though he wasn’t choosing the college path Darlene desired, she had inadvertently aided him in becoming an individual capable of finding his own way.
The resilience that has been nurtured by the Conners family through numerous trials and tribulations, as depicted since the era of ‘Roseanne’, has always been a central theme. Even though ‘The Conners’ season 7, episode 2 hinted at Roseanne’s skepticism towards Darlene and Becky, the Conner family has consistently stood by each other in times of struggle. Darlene may be as disappointed about Mark’s early exit as any viewer, but her commitment to offering emotional support remains unwavering. This dynamic promises that the finale will be one of ‘The Conners’ most outstanding episodes yet.
In the finale of the series, some characters experience satisfying conclusions, while others embark on fresh beginnings following years of unfulfilled expectations. However, when Dan fails to win his lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company suspected of causing Roseanne’s death, the family manages to find humor in their disappointment and shares a poignant evening together. The show The Conners has consistently emphasized family as the only constant in our lives, even in the absence of justice for a lost loved one. In the face of setbacks like Mark’s absence, the family’s resilient spirit ensures that their journey continues without disruption.
