The DreamWorks Animation’s “How to Train Your Dragon” series, based on Cressida Cowell’s popular book collection that made it to the New York Times Best Sellers list, has garnered four Academy Award nominations and amassed over $1.6 billion in global box office earnings. Throughout its journey, it has ignited the creativity of countless children and adults alike.
Currently, three-time Oscar-nominated director Dean DeBlois, famous for his work on the original animated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, is converting the animated story into a breathtaking live-action blockbuster. This transformation will make the adventures of Hiccup and Toothless appear incredibly lifelike.
Director Dean Deblois explained his choice to rewatch “How to Train Your Dragon” as follows: “I wanted you to experience the exhilaration of soaring on a dragon’s back, along with the terror of potentially plummeting. The fire from dragons is intense, and encounters with enemy dragons can be life-threatening. I aimed to create an immersive, exciting atmosphere. That’s why we constructed the island of Berk.

This is your chance to explore this captivating world before anyone else!

As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon,” hitting theaters on June 13, 2025! Gone are the days of enchanting animated landscapes, as this new version brings massive sets, intricately designed costumes, and an authentically detailed Viking village that promises to transport us into the heart of the story.
In this vivid world, we’ll encounter Hiccup (played by Mason Thames), a boy brimming with ingenuity but often overlooked due to his father’s imposing stature as Stoick the Vast (portrayed by Gerard Butler), the powerful chief of the Vikings.
In simpler terms, Gerard Butler expressed that he feels alive in this world, especially when observing scenes filled with dynamic energy, such as those adorned with decorations, lighting, and blazing torches within the grand hall. This energy captivates people, making them embrace the story more wholeheartedly. Essentially, these intense scenes serve to immerse viewers further into the characters Hiccup and Toothless’s world.
In this tale, Hiccup becomes acquainted with a Night Fury, a sleek black dragon adorned with hidden fangs, whom he affectionately nicknames Toothless. Together, Hiccup and his newfound friend must persuade their separate tribes to unite against an age-old and formidable enemy in order to ensure their survival. Beyond this, they discover the wisdom that friendship is more valuable than enmity, as unity brings prosperity for all.
In collaboration with Astrid, a BAFTA-nominated actress (Nico Parker from Dumbo and The Last of Us) and the eccentric blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost known for Snow White and the Huntsman and Shaun of the Dead), Hiccup and Toothless take the initiative to combat deep-seated biases across generations and battle otherworldly wickedness.
According to Mason Thames, the village appeared to have between 15 and 20 homes. It seemed lively, with Vikings bustling about and a sense of chaos in the air. He also mentioned that everything was crafted with such affection, making it an incredibly moving story, particularly when viewed on the big screen in live-action format.
In my gaming world, I’ve got some exciting news for all Dragon fans! The live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon” features an amazing cast. Besides me, there’s Julian Dennison from Deadpool 2, Gabriel Howell from Bodies, Bronwyn James from Wicked, Harry Trevaldwyn from Smothered, Ruth Codd from The Midnight Club, Peter Serafinowicz, BAFTA nominee known for Guardians of the Galaxy, and Murray McArthur, a familiar face from Game of Thrones. Can’t wait to see this epic adventure unfold!
Drawing or creating on a computer may be easy, but building something with care and love for every detail takes it to another level,” said director DeBlois. “The chance to craft a world like this and reimagine characters in a new light is incredibly exciting because I understand the heart of this story. It’s a privilege to be involved, and I am thrilled about it.
The movie “How to Train Your Dragon” is crafted by DeBlois, both as writer and director. It’s also a production of three-time Oscar nominee Marc Platt, known for hits like “Wicked” and “La La Land”, and Emmy winner Adam Siegel, famous for films such as “Drive” and “2 Guns”. Secure your tickets for “How to Train Your Dragon” in theaters nationwide on June 13, 2025.
