Keith’s Shocking Death in Grosse Pointe Garden Society: The Truth Revealed

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Grosse Pointe Garden Society season 1, episode 11.

In the gripping world of Grosse Pointe Garden Society, I’ve now learned the identity of the deceased from episode 11 of season 1. The events that unfolded were far from what anyone might have anticipated. On the fateful night of the gala, each character – Birdie, Catherine, Brett, and Alice – found themselves grappling with their own personal turmoils.

However, it wasn’t until Patty’s test results suggested she was responsible for harming Alice’s dog that tensions escalated. In a dramatic turn of events, the group decided to exact revenge by stealing Patty’s new quilt and planning to destroy it in a gas-powered wood chipper – hardly the most benign act they could have conceived.

In a surprising turn of events, Keith appears to confront Alice about the angry message she sent Patty. By the way, do those green sneakers belong to him? The group gets into a heated argument over the quilt, and when it gets stuck in the machine, Keith becomes insistent on retrieving it. After much struggle, he is forced back due to the exertion, only to be impaled by gardening tools, as seen in the show’s initial episodes. Since this unfortunate incident was an accident, as we learn from future events, the group chooses to bury the body instead of reporting it. So, Alice finds herself in a tricky situation when it comes to explaining this unexpected series of events to her husband.

Following the viewing of the episode, I had a conversation with show creators Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs regarding the significant revelation in Grosse Pointe Garden Society season 1 episode 11, as well as discussing where the storyline heads next.

Bans And Krebs Teases More Twists In Grosse Pointe Garden Society’s Remaining Episodes

“There’s more information that we don’t have that is the opening of the next episode.”

ScreenRant: With just a few episodes remaining in the season, why did you decide to unveil the identity of the deceased in this particular episode?

Jenna Bans: We knew we didn’t want to keep it till the very, very end.

Bill Krebs: People expect it to be the final episode, or even worse, they think we’ll just hint at it and then leave it unresolved for season 2. We didn’t want to do that from the start because, as fans of TV shows ourselves, we dislike it when that happens too.

Jenna Bans explained that they initially had 13 episodes planned for the series, but considering the nature of the show, that seemed excessive. Therefore, they decided not to go beyond 13 episodes. Instead, they found themselves debating between having 10 or 11 episodes in the final cut.

Initially, we viewed it as if we were watching a suspenseful movie. We believed we had reached the climax at the end of Act Two, thinking the problem was solved and the culprit apprehended. However, much like in a thriller, unexpected twists occur in Act Three, making us realize that things are not as they seemed or that we’ve been focusing on the wrong person. Our goal was to create a three-part climax, where information from Episode 11 influences Episode 12 and another twist unfolds in Episode 13.

When exactly during the performance did it become clear to you that Keith was going to meet his end? Was there a moment of doubt about whose body it was, at any point?

Jenna Bans: Yes, prior to filming the series, we were already aware because we enjoyed the concept that there are multiple “antagonists” in the pilot. Characters like Connor, Misty, and Gary, who truly deserve their fates. Individuals you somewhat find yourself wishing ill of.

Bill Krebs: Yeah, they have it coming.

Jennifer Banks: Keith simply doesn’t, and we find charm in the notion that life can be unpredictable at times. Not everyone who deserves it necessarily gets their fair share of consequences.

Bill Krebs: In addition, if the person being dealt with was excessively deserving, it can make our characters seem less accountable. It eases their moral dilemma and removes any lingering guilt. We wanted this action to have a lasting impact on them and continue to trouble them in the future. If we didn’t do that, it would be like saying, “Well, we resolved that issue and everyone is happy.” Then there would be no further tension for these characters moving forward in their lives. So, we made sure to include this aspect.

Jenna Bans: We were fond of how the plot impacted Alice’s relationships, particularly with her mother-in-law, Patty, and husband, Doug. It’s clear that this situation will lead to much drama in the future.

Bill Krebs: She’s going to be reminded of it every time she looks at him.

Patty May Not Have Killed Alice’s Dog

“These answers can become shaded differently once we catch up to present day and there’s different context.”

I find it intriguing that it turned out to be an accident. In some sense, it feels more problematic, as if they had simply admitted the truth, perhaps the outcome could have been different and better.

Essentially, we aimed for this outcome from the start. We often emphasized that they brought about their downfall themselves. If just one choice had been different – if Alice hadn’t suspected Patty of killing her dog, if Brett hadn’t behaved a certain way, or if these characters had made other decisions – they might not have found themselves in this nighttime predicament. Going back to Catherine, if she hadn’t given the gun and bullet results to Alice that fateful night, none of it would have transpired. Therefore, each character played a part in their own misfortune.

Jenna Bans: The beginning of the next episode will introduce a surprising turn of events that explains why these characters can’t contact the authorities. Essentially, there are certain details we haven’t been privy to yet, which will be unveiled in the upcoming episode. This means that despite their initial intention to call the police, they ultimately choose not to for a specific and intriguing reason.

Bill Krebs: It felt authentic as well, since we intended it to be a harmless joke that spiraled out of control. You often witness such incidents on YouTube, and they never aimed for this outcome. When the unimaginable happens, though, how do you adapt? How do you make a momentous, life-altering choice under pressure? Why did you make that decision, and how do you cope with its consequences? And what’s more, how do you continue living in the aftermath?

In simple terms, Jenna Bans hints that the upcoming episode starts off with high drama. She chooses to keep the details vague, and instead, describes the beginning as a thrilling, action-packed ten minutes.

Alice believes Patty killed her dog. Is that confirmed?

Jenna Bans: Is something ever confirmed until it’s fully confirmed?

It feels a little suspicious.

Jenna Bans hints that we’ll need to be patient, as the remaining two episodes this season will provide the answers.

Bill Krebs: As we know, there can be alternative facts.

Jenna Bans: One aspect that makes this series appealing is how we discovered, for instance, the Birdie-Joel pregnancy storyline unfolding in the second episode with scenes showing Joel concealing a murder for Birdie. Now, with additional episodes, we’ve gained a deeper understanding of why and how this happened due to her pregnancy situation.

By viewing these interactions unfold, you’ll gain insights that help complete the picture of events previously unseen, bringing us up-to-date. Similarly, things we believed were crystal clear may take on new hues as we progress into the current era, with fresh perspectives emerging from updated context.

Bill Krebs: And perspective.
