What Happened to Insomniac’s Venom Game?

Enthusiasts will recall the intriguing Insomniac Games leak that unveiled several projects in development, among them a Venom video game. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 appeared to function as a covert trial run for Venom’s game, as it incorporated a playable section featuring the character and even included a boss battle.

After several years have passed, there’s still curiosity lingering: Where is Insomniac’s Venom game now? Some speculated that materials developed for Spider-Man 2 might find their way into this supposed spinoff, but no progress has been made. A clandestine release similar to the Oblivion Remastered would be intriguing, though it doesn’t seem likely.

The well-known leak from Insomniac Games sparked excitement among fans about a potential game featuring this character, as it seemed destined for success. Given the strong affection most Marvel enthusiasts have for this character, there was widespread optimism that this rumor might actually be true. However, with no recent updates or announcements, it appears this project could join the ranks of those that were unfortunately canceled.

It’s likely that Marvel enthusiasts recall an anticipated spinoff for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which was intended to be a multiplayer game. A teaser trailer for the game surfaced, showcasing a playable character, Spider-Gwen. Notably, this trailer featured the voice of Yuri Lowenthal, who voices Spider-Man, suggesting that some development had taken place before the project’s cancellation.

As an ardent admirer of Insomniac Games, I can’t help but wonder if the talk about the Venom game, which only surfaced in those leaks, might have just been a proposal that never materialized into a full-fledged project. Just like how Spider-Man 2 hinted at DLC for such a long time, but it never actually came to pass. Even when the game was finally released on PC, they made it clear that there would be no additional content for the game.

Bear in mind that at this point, the idea of a Venom game from Insomniac Games is purely conjecture. They might shock us all by unexpectedly revealing plans for such a game. However, given their current focus on developing the much-anticipated Wolverine title, it seems likely we’ll have to be patient. As for when Wolverine will be released, that’s still up in the air, which leaves room for speculation about potential Venom projects.

Venom, a character popularized in video games since the ’90s, has made appearances in titles such as Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage on SNES and Genesis. Following this, he’s been featured in Marvel vs Capcom, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Ultimate Spider-Man, among others. It’s certainly possible that we could see a dedicated game for Venom; however, whether it materializes is yet to be determined.

I’m crossing my fingers that Insomniac Games is working on additional adventures for Marvel’s Lethal Protector. Ideally, he should be featured in their upcoming Spider-Man game as well.
