The Wheel of Time: Will Mat’s Fate Still Mirror the Books After Elaida’s Shocking Twist?

The third season of this captivating show has come to a close, and the climax delivered an exhilarating ending to an enthralling season. One of the most unexpected moments in the finale, titled “He Who Comes With the Dawn,” was the unveiling that, contrary to what appeared to be hinted throughout the series, Amazon’s adaptation of Randland incorporates the elusive Eelfinn and Aelfinn – a shocking revelation, especially given the numerous other jaw-dropping surprises in the finale.

Indeed, during this episode, we managed to encounter both the Eelfinn and Aelfinn, even though only the fox-like Eelfinn was visible on-screen after Mat (Dónal Finn) passed through a redstone doorway in Tanchico. The Aelfinn’s presence was hinted at in the prologue, as they were visited by Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan (Shohreh Aghdashloo) via another redstone doorway, this time in the White Tower. Therefore, there is still a possibility that Mat will encounter the serpentine Aelfinn in the future.

The Wheel Of Time Season 3 Reveals How Mat Can Meet The Aelfinn

It appears that within The Wheel of Time series, Mat may be experiencing the Finnish groups in a reversed sequence. In the novels, Mat initially passes through a redstone doorway known as a ter’angreal in the Stone of Tear at the start of “The Shadow Rising”. Here, he interacts with the Aelfinn who guide him towards his future. Later in the same book, Mat encounters another redstone archway, this time within Rhuidean, where he meets the Eelfinn, receives his foxhead medallion, ashandarei, and is filled with wisdom for the battlefield.

Intriguingly, even though the Eelfinn presented Mat with the actual items, it appears they may have taken memories from him instead of bestowing them – specifically, the recollections that were forced upon him when he sounded the Horn of Valere in season 2. It seems possible that more memories have vanished as well, which we can only hope will spur Mat to discover a means to pass through the second redstone doorway once again, since it’s plausible that it remains within the White Tower, allowing him to eventually encounter the Aelfinn.

Why Meeting The Aelfinn Is So Important To Mat’s Future

As a dedicated movie buff diving into the world of “The Shadow Rising,” I can’t overlook the pivotal role Mat’s encounter with the Aelfinn holds. The initial prophecy they bestow upon him underscores his importance in accompanying Rand to Rhuidean, but given that the series has sent Mat to Tanchico instead, this aspect seems to have lost its relevance. However, it’s the second prophecy they impart that I believe should find its way into the Amazon Prime adaptation:

Suddenly, a group of about a dozen men in yellow uniforms seemed to materialize around Mat, attempting to drag him towards the door. He defended himself with punches, elbows, and knees. “What destiny lies ahead? As I follow the prophecies unfold, I see myself:

* Marrying Tuon Paendrag, the future queen of the Seanchan empire.
* Meeting my end at the hands of Rahvin during a struggle to liberate Caemlyn, only to be brought back to life when Rand employs balefire to vanquish Rahvin.
* Losing an eye in battle while rescuing Moiraine from the Silver Tower, and then contributing to our triumph at the Last Battle.

These events may yet transpire, one way or another, within Amazon’s The Wheel of Time, provided that Amazon (and fate) allows it to happen.
