Given that Grand Theft Auto 6 has been postponed until next year, it’s amusing to ponder over how enthusiasts have continued playing GTA 5 for two console generations now. This fifth edition of Rockstar’s legendary series remains incredibly popular, as evidenced by its distinction as the first-ever PS5 game unveiled during Sony’s initial State of Play presentation.
It’s surprising to remember that Grand Theft Auto 5 was initially launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, given how long it’s been since then. This means it belongs to the seventh generation of gaming, along with GTA 4. Interestingly, only one of these games has been updated for current-generation consoles.
It’s amazing to recall that the entire lineup of GTA games from this era can run smoothly on a sturdy PlayStation 3 and a scratch-free Xbox 360. Even Grand Theft Auto Online, which gained notoriety during this generation, quickly became a hit among gamers seeking engaging online play. It’s reasonable that the game is no longer updated for these older systems as it’s still popular today, but it’s also a bit melancholic.
Initially, GTA 5 has always been visually appealing, so enhancing its graphics on 8th-generation systems wasn’t particularly surprising. While the game performed better on these consoles, the visual improvement didn’t seem significant, a common issue with early remasters. However, Rockstar Games compensated for this by maintaining the online mode and incorporating a first-person perspective into these updated versions, which indeed alters the gaming experience.
Although switching to a first-person perspective adds an exciting twist, it’s essentially a minor modification in the grand scheme of things. If players prefer, they can continue enjoying the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, which offer the full campaign experience. All the critically acclaimed bank heist missions are still included, so anyone interested should definitely give this version a try, especially if they haven’t done so already.
Refreshingly seeing Rockstar Games repeatedly rerelease Grand Theft Auto V seemed almost comical at times, yet it has its merits for video game preservation. In case fans eventually grow displeased with GTA 6 due to high pricing or lack of innovative gameplay elements, they’ll still have the prior title to enjoy. It’s also likely that GTA Online will continue receiving updates, and there’s a chance GTA 6 might incorporate a mode instead of replacing it altogether.

It’s astonishing to witness Rockstar continuing their support for a game like GTA 5, which originated during the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era. Although it’s the latest iteration of the game that fans are currently enjoying, its ability to endure various console generations sets it apart, making it truly exceptional.
