In collaboration with Peter Safran, James Gunn, who shares the CEO role at DC Studios, is rebooting the DC Universe. This fresh beginning kicks off this summer with a revamped take on an iconic story.
In the upcoming superhero film, you’ll also see Krypto, who is Superman’s canine companion. This addition has been one of the most thrilling surprises for the new Superman, and there’s a heartwarming real-life connection: Krypto was modeled after Gunn’s actual dog, Ozu. In a recent video on his account, Gunn shared an adorable moment of Ozu reacting to seeing himself on screen.
The video labeled “Ozu and Krypto” presents a sneak peek of the forthcoming Superman, featuring David Corenswet’s hero sprawled in the snow, with Krypto positioned beside him. As you watch, Krypto is seen frolicking around and barking at the screen. Director Gunn also included a tag for the upcoming film and a shout-out to “OzutheDog.
In a fascinating revelation about bringing his beloved pet to the silver screen, the director of Superman explained how they transformed their dog into the character Krypto: “By using 3D technology, we captured our dog Ozu and modeled Krypto based on Ozu’s physical form. Essentially, you could say that Krypto is a 3D representation of Ozu, with some screen-barking to boot.
Gunn stated, “He became pale and whenever he appears on-screen, he seems to want to kill himself,” concluded Gunn, as Ozu persisted in shouting at the screen.
Back in October 2024, I spilled the beans about Krypto being in the movie. Later on, I shared the heartwarming story behind his inclusion. Here’s a fun tidbit: “Krypto is modeled after our rescue dog, Ozu, whom we took in just as I began writing Superman.” Now, let me tell you about Ozu – he was from a hoarding situation with 60 other dogs and had never encountered humans before. Needless to say, he was quite the handful!
Initially, the production faced numerous challenges, but these struggles sparked an idea to incorporate Superdog (Krypto) into the movie. Reflecting on those tough times, I found myself pondering, “What if Ozu, our director, had superpowers?” –and that’s how Krypto made his way into the script and reshaped the narrative as Ozu was shaping my life.
The filmmaker additionally highlighted Adoption of a Shelter Dog Month, falling in October, and shared affectionately, “By the way, Ozu nowadays, is usually a very good boy indeed.
One Superman Character Is Not Thrilled With Krypto
Originating from the same planet as his master, this character shares a cosmic connection with Earth, and now, he’s stepping into live-action for the first time in the summer blockbuster superhero movie, coinciding with the launch of the DCU. However, not every film character instantly takes a liking to Krypto.
Superman lands in theaters on July 11.
