Amid significant transformations in the television industry and uncertainties in advertising due to tariffs and technological shifts, NBCUniversal’s Spanish-language media division, Telemundo Enterprises, is placing its bets on live events and content, believing this strategy will help it maintain a distinctive presence in an increasingly congested market.
Approximately 70% of Telemundo’s programming for the upcoming season is expected to be live broadcasts, featuring sports events like NFL and NBA games, live news and entertainment programs, as well as next year’s FIFA World Cup, which Telemundo holds the rights to air in Spanish.
A significant portion will air on Peacock, but for Telemundo, it’s part of their strategy to strengthen their linear channels by providing an abundance of must-watch programming.
According to Luis Fernández, chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, during an interview, he emphasized that the success lies in the content. To achieve this, a plan, a goal, a purpose, the necessary resources, and funding are required. The priority is to safeguard our traditional TV broadcasting, and we do this by concentrating on live TV programming. This is our objective, our vision. If you’re live, you’re on Telemundo because for us, live TV is crucial for traditional TV. It’s a vital aspect for us, with one stipulation: produce the best content in news, sports, entertainment, and scripted programming.
Telemundo is also placing its bet on a programming approach designed to attract younger viewers as well as multi-generational families.
Monica Gil, the executive vice president and chief administrative and marketing officer at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, explains that live programming isn’t merely entertainment for our viewers; rather, it serves as a means for them to navigate their daily lives. The audience feels a sense of connection. In our perspective, live is a tool that links cultures together. Essentially, the primary reason people tune in to live broadcasts is to share time and connect with others. Furthermore, we recognize that live content appeals particularly to younger demographics, a group that everyone seeks to attract. Live programming also helps bridge geographical gaps, even when viewers are physically apart.
Next year, there’s no more fitting demonstration than the World Cup, taking place in 16 different cities spanning the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
As stated by Joaquin Duro, Executive Vice President of Sports at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, their aim is to offer a comprehensive Olympics-style coverage for the World Cup, focusing not just on the athletes, but also on the unique locations where the games are being held.
I’m thrilled to embark on this journey, as it offers me a unique chance to forge deeper connections with our fans and communities. This time around, instead of telling tales from afar about events in other countries, I get to share stories rooted right here, in ours. Covering an event within our borders means we can delve into the emotions, culture, and spirit of our own people, creating a stronger bond that transcends sports.
Additionally, Telemundo views the World Cup as a chance to connect with a far greater number of viewers. While Fox has the English-language broadcast rights, it’s important to mention that during the last World Cup in 2022, Telemundo was able to appeal to a much more diverse demographic spectrum.
Approximately one third of the viewers on Peacock were non-Hispanic individuals who tuned in to watch this, and then around a third of that audience was predominantly Spanish-speaking but fluent in English as well, according to Duro.
I’m excitedly embarking on a journey that, as outlined by Fernández, aims to modernize Telemundo’s sports, news, and entertainment content. The goal is to make our offerings contemporary and appealing to viewers, regardless of where they choose to tune in from.
Fernandez states, ‘It’s crucial to ready Telemundo for what lies ahead.’ He emphasizes that their strategy of going live is a significant move aimed at maintaining their significance in the future.
