By the end of Thunderbolts, it is clear that the main team goes by another name, which was hinted at in the film’s title with an asterisk (*). For months, fans have speculated about the meaning behind this asterisk, and the final scene finally unveiled it as a temporary label for the actual team name: The New Avengers. The New Avengers have long been anticipated in the MCU, with the post-credit scene of Thunderbolts showing the team’s unity 14 months after the film’s main storyline concluded.

Among all the upcoming Marvel films, this particular scene lays the groundwork for the two _Avengers_ movies set to release in 2026 and 2027. This was evident in two highly-rated MCU films, Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Thus, Avengers: Doomsday will resonate as familiar territory for the Russo Brothers as filmmakers, while also offering a sense of familiarity to viewers as they encounter a story format they have previously experienced.
