It’s unlikely that in 2023, “Suits” (2011-19) would be hailed as the year’s biggest hit show, but if it had been, it’s safe to say that the inevitable spinoff, “Suits LA,” wouldn’t have been abruptly canceled just weeks before wrapping up its first season.
On Friday, NBC chose to remove “Suits LA”, along with four other shows – “Lopez vs. Lopez”, “Night Court”, “The Irrational”, and “Found” – from their schedule. This was necessary to make room for the return of NBA basketball on the network.
But if any of those five were hits, NBC executives would have found a time slot.
Jeff Bader, NBC’s programming strategy president, expressed difficulty discussing shows and their reintroduction on a media call the day after. He noted that ‘Suits (LA)’ had a brief run but failed to captivate audiences as expected. There could be numerous reasons for this, with many people guessing why it didn’t connect; however, sadly, it doesn’t seem to have the potential to expand its audience for us in the future.
Bader went on to say, “We need to evaluate and decide upon the shows based on their performance, whether it’s on traditional television or digital platforms. We want to identify those with potential for future growth. Therefore, we’re examining their stability on linear television, their performance on digital media, which ones are increasing in popularity, and which ones are losing traction. Making these choices has not been easy.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been keeping tabs on the latest TV news, and here’s what I’ve gathered: Bader and NBC’s team have been brainstorming about shifting shows that were axed, such as Suits LA, over to Peacock. That’s five potential moves, if you ask me. So far, NBC hasn’t relocated a show from broadcast to Peacock since last year with Law & Order: Organized Crime. There’s a chance that the Grosse Pointe Garden Society might be next on the list.
The television series, Suits LA, has broadcast 12 episodes so far, and the season (or series) finale is set for this coming Sunday. In the original Suits series, stars like Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter and David Costabile as Daniel Hardman have reprised their roles, with Rick Hoffman joining again as Louis Litt for the last few episodes starting from Sunday night. However, the primary focus of Suits LA seems to be on introducing its new legal team, headed by Stephen Amell’s character, Ted, an entertainment lawyer, and winning over the audience with them.
Initially, “Suits” performed well during its broadcast on USA Network. However, it wasn’t until Peacock and Netflix shared the streaming rights in June 2023 that the series took off culturally. This marked a turning point as it topped Nielsen’s streaming charts for an unprecedented 12 consecutive weeks, outperforming “Ozark” for the first time.
Or, more concisely:
In June 2023, when Peacock and Netflix acquired the streaming rights, “Suits” transformed from a successful show to a cultural phenomenon. It remained number one on Nielsen’s streaming charts for 12 consecutive weeks, surpassing “Ozark”.
NBC will host its annual upfront Monday morning at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
