- SEC’s new chair signals shift toward clearer, collaborative crypto regulations. (With fewer cryptic pirate maps, hopefully.)
- Over 70 crypto ETFs await SEC approval amid rising market optimism. (Imagine 70 toddlers at a locked candy store.)
The crypto industry began the week as one does before a colonoscopy: anxious, hopeful, and determined not to check Twitter. All eyes were on the SEC’s splashy May 12th roundtable, ominously themed “Tokenization: Moving Assets Onchain”—which sounds like a 1960s game show but somehow involves fewer sequins.
Billed as a “spring sprint toward crypto clarity,” insiders whispered this could finally be the moment regulators do something somewhat comprehensible. The real plot twist? BlackRock—yes, that BlackRock—had a secretive pow-wow with the SEC’s Crypto Task Force just days before, perhaps to clarify what “onchain” actually means or maybe just to swap Memecoin memes.
Word on the street was the SEC would discuss staking mechanisms, tokenization infrastructure, and—wait for it—a set of standards for crypto ETFs that don’t sound like legally binding riddles. Meanwhile, Cardano’s Charles Hoskinson announced he’s tired of crypto’s reputation as a snooze-fest and will now sprint, not walk, into the future. Someone brought energy drinks, apparently. 🏃♂️💨
SEC Chair reveals his vision during the SEC Crypto roundtable
Like the opening act at a financial Woodstock, SEC Chair Paul Atkins stepped up with a keynote address strong enough to wake the institutional investors in the back row. He proudly declared it was a “new day” for crypto, which, for the uninitiated, means everyone has to pretend they know what that means for at least a week.
“A key priority of my chairmanship will be to develop a rational regulatory framework for crypto asset markets that establishes clear rules of the road for the issuance, custody and trading of crypto assets while continuing to discourage bad actors from violating the law.”
If that sounds clear as mud, congratulations: you’ve been paying attention. But don’t worry, Atkins promised to ditch the “shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later” habit. Maybe now the agency can invest in metaphorical Nerf guns.
He claimed, deadpan:
“It is a new day at the SEC. Policymaking will no longer result from ad hoc enforcement actions.”
Prevailing challenges
Gene Hoffman, CEO of Chia Network, summed up the general mood as “the SEC is now open for business,” possibly picturing a bureaucratic lemonade stand. (SEC lemonade: 5¢, must show proof of liquidity.)
Hoffman noticed,
“Instead of focusing solely on risks, this SEC recognizes the significant opportunities decentralized public blockchains create for investors.”
Some may recall the last chair, Gary Gensler, whose reputation for strict regulation makes my dentist seem fun by comparison. Now, with Atkins at the helm, hope creeps in—along with a few lingering trust issues.
Of course, not all is crypto rainbows and regulatory buttercups. The SEC is still knee-deep in its epic boss fight with Ripple, while over 70 ETF applications continue to loiter in regulatory purgatory. According to Bloomberg’s Eric Balchunas, that’s a backlog so impressive it deserves its own reality show.
Still, optimism is contagious. Crypto keeps booming, market cap is at a jaw-dropping $3.4 trillion, and for the first time in ages, people pretend to look forward to what the SEC will say next. Now, all we need is for someone to explain how to actually buy an ETF without summoning a minor demon. 🤷♂️🍿
