ESPN unveiled its much-anticipated direct-to-consumer streaming platform on Tuesday, with plans to debut in the fall for $29.99 per month. Alternatively, for $35.99 per month, subscribers can opt for a bundle that includes Disney+ and Hulu as well.
The service, which will be called ESPN, will live inside a completely redesigned ESPN app.
During a press conference at Disney’s New York office this morning, Jimmy Pitaro, who is in charge of ESPN, stated that despite considering various alternatives, they consistently found themselves returning to the acronym ESPN. He described the choice as “straightforward,” “uncomplicated,” and “easy to understand.
For a limited time, ESPN is offering an introductory bundle deal of $29.99 for all three of their services for the initial 12 months. Coinciding with this launch, ESPN plans to rename ESPN+ as ESPN Select and it will continue to be priced at $11.99.
The business provides an annual plan priced at $299.99, in addition to a monthly subscription without ads on Disney+ and Hulu, which costs $44.99.
According to Pitaro, individuals who subscribe to pay-TV packages including ESPN will also gain access to the streaming service. He emphasizes that the company tends to be flexible and adaptable across different platforms, a quality often referred to as being “platform agnostic.
Pitaro stated, ‘Ultimately, our success will be determined by the number of people who subscribe to ESPN overall.’ We’re content with the conventional world, the established system. We’ve made great efforts to preserve this system, and we plan to prioritize it in the future.
He mentioned that Disney openly discusses its streaming strategies with its distribution partners, aiming to provide smooth access for pay-TV subscribers.
The company announced that Rich Eisen would be rejoining them, bringing his “Rich Eisen Show” to both Disney+ and ESPN. Moreover, ESPN has verified that it will offer its complete collection of live sports and studio programs. Additionally, the company is expected to reveal other collaborators in the near future.
In the lead-up to their fall launch, it’s expected that there will be more programming news. However, Pitaro hinted at some other key focus areas for the company: They aim to negotiate partnerships with sports leagues for regional networks, which could potentially be offered as additional services, and they are exploring methods to integrate AI into their technological infrastructure.
Pitaro stated that they are heavily invested in artificial intelligence at the moment, and are currently engaging their top team members to get them on the same page about using AI for storytelling.
