The movie ‘The Lion King‘ unveiled the intricate relationship between Mufasa, the ruler of the Pride Lands and chief lion, and his younger brother Scar. The storyline revolves around Simba, Mufasa’s cub, who strives to reclaim the pride from Scar following Mufasa’s demise. The bond between Mufasa and Scar transcended sibling rivalry; it was a genuine power struggle that could only be resolved by the upcoming generation.
The central villain of the movie is Scar, a name derived from the distinctive mark above his left eye. From first glance, it’s clear that this lion isn’t exactly friendly, and there’s definitely something ominous brewing. In the 1994 original, we don’t learn how he got his scar, but additional stories within the franchise explain how Scar earned his namesake.
In contrast, there are two contrasting accounts: One originates from an animated tale featuring a serpent, while the other stems from a live-action movie centered around a brotherly struggle. The snake yarn was published first, but the battle for the brother is more relevant within the film’s narrative and is relayed by a more trustworthy source. Let’s delve into how Scar obtained his scar and decipher the impact of each tale on his character.
The Lion Guard first showed how Scar got his namesake
The Disney animated series titled “The Lion Guard” offers insights into how the character Scar acquired his notorious scar, named after him. Although Scar is already deceased by the time he appears in this show (his demise occurred in 1994’s “The Lion King”), his spirit continues to create trouble for Simba beyond the grave, a concept consistent with his death in the original film.
In the opening of season 3’s first episode, Scar’s future reign is foreshadowed through a musical number. As a young lion on duty, Scar encounters another lion who prophesies that Scar, not Mufasa, should be king due to his powerful roar. This other lion hints at the possibility of shared rule. However, accompanying this new lion is a snake, which bites Scar, leaving him with a scar and poisoning his mind, leading him towards ambition for the throne. The same lion bearing a matching scar implies that he too was bitten by the snake, suggesting a shared destiny.
Since the storyline coincides with the timeframe of the “Lion King” sequel, many fans view it as being either fully or largely consistent within the franchise. Although there are some inconsistencies and unresolved issues regarding its continuity with “The Lion King,” these are not more than those found in other projects within the series. It further develops Scar’s plan from “The Lion Guard,” where he intends to have another young lion bitten by a cobra, creating an adversary for Simba.
Mufasa: The Lion King shows a different story
With the arrival of “Mufasa: The Lion King” in 2024, the story of Scar was retold once more, but this time from the perspective of Rafiki, the mandrill character introduced in “The Lion King.” He shares with Simba and Nala’s cub Kiara all he knows about Simba’s father, Scar, and others, potentially making him a more trustworthy source for Scar’s past events. In this portrayal, Rafiki paints a picture of Scar as heroic rather than power-hungry, offering a glimmer of positivity amidst the otherwise gloomy history of Scar.
In Rafiki’s tale, Scar gains his scar during a confrontation with Kiro, a white lion, when he tries to prevent Kiro from killing Mufasa in a fight. Despite being the one who initiated the situation by deceiving Kiro into believing he would join his pride while allowing Kiro to escape after attacking Mufasa as retaliation for the death of his cub, Scar later regrets his actions and intervenes. This unexpected change of plan leads Kiro to attack Scar, causing a wound to his eye.
In this revised account of the tale, Scar earns his name through shielding his sibling initially, contrary to how he is portrayed in “The Lion Guard,” where it leads to his fall. This modification gives a sense of redemption that was missing from the original storyline, but also makes his subsequent attempt to harm his brother more heart-wrenching and disillusioning as we recall he had saved him earlier.
