In an article published recently by Ted Litchfield, we refer to YouTuber Bacon as the undisputed ruler of meme videos based on the game Oblivion. If you’ve ever found yourself laughing hysterically at a popular video showcasing Oblivion’s exceptional humor, chances are it was one of Bacon’s videos you enjoyed.
Beyond his prowess in comedy, Bacon is also renowned as a heroic figure within the realm of Tamriel. In a recent demonstration, he displayed his ability to shield Emperor Uriel Septim, played by Patrick Stewart, from an assassin’s strike, much like a seasoned FBI agent executing a judo chop on Lee Harvey Oswald before he could fire a shot.
It seems this technique is quite straightforward: by repeatedly saving, loading your game, and moving next to a specific door during the tutorial level, you can exploit a glitch that allows you to pass through the game’s levels. If your aim is accurate, you can end up behind the assassin who is programmed to kill the Emperor. Interestingly, this assassin isn’t hostile, and by simply striking him on the head, you can prevent the Oblivion Crisis without any further complications.
According to Bacon, contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t through console commands or mods. Instead, he explained that he manipulated the game to see the unexpected outcomes, a process that resulted in some intriguing videos. One of these videos is titled “This is where my journey ends,” which depicts the Emperor’s demise and Baurus’ peculiar reaction, applauding the corpse in a manner reminiscent of a strange scene from Twin Peaks. This video also includes additional dialogue that can only be triggered when you remain undetected by the Mythic Dawn, an occurrence that seldom happens spontaneously.
In another video, it was “Oblivion,” yet here I managed to rescue Emperor Uriel Septim. This demonstrates the method of rescuing Tamriel’s leader and guiding him through the primary quest, much like leading a confused child around a grocery store.
In Oblivion (the game), since you can’t alter the storyline by bypassing its tutorial and saving the Emperor, characters act as if he’s deceased even when he’s present and engaged in casual conversations. Saving the Emperor isn’t particularly difficult according to Bacon, but maintaining Glenroy’s survival is much more challenging. Bacon’s video on this topic is lengthy not due to the complexity of saving Uriel, but because preventing other scripted deaths in the game requires a great deal of effort.
Bacon spent around 70 hours figuring out how to beat Oblivion using numerous glitches and managed to save the Emperor while minimizing most scripted deaths,” Bacon claims. I think every moment was worth it, I reply. Although the other inhabitants of Cyrodiil may not recognize it, in my eyes, Bacon is still a hero of Tamriel.
