The 1999 teen comedy classic, 10 Things I Hate About You, which greatly influenced its audience, is set to have a follow-up titled 10 Things I Hate About Dating. Just like the original, this project is being directed by Gil Junger. He describes it as having a similar atmosphere but not being a direct continuation of the first film. Junger refers to it as “a love story for those who’ve uninstalled dating apps and then reinstalled them again.
1999 saw teenagers having little understanding about what an app meant or its impact on contemporary life. Instead, a film based on “The Taming of the Shrew” by Shakespeare, titled originally, was a refreshing and intelligent portrayal of high school life, starring Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik, among others. For the past three years, numerous individuals have inquired, “Why haven’t you made another one?” My response has been, “I should, indeed.” The absence of Kat (Julia Stiles) was a factor, and I chose not to resemble the original film because Heath [Ledger] is no longer with us. I felt it would be rather sad to revisit that era.
In his initial try for a sequel titled “10 Things I Hate About Life“, Junger encountered a project that was ultimately scrapped and involved some legal complications. For the upcoming, yet unconfirmed by Disney’s IP owners, project, he is shifting his focus to an entirely new cast of characters and opting for Molière as inspiration instead of Shakespeare. The forthcoming movie, named “10 Things I Hate About Dating“, draws inspiration from “The Misanthrope” – a play about someone who despises high society, glamour, and all that is phony and flashy. Junger emphasized that even without the original characters, the film will retain “the same mix of warmth and wit [as the first movie], because it’s still the same team handling production and direction.
Junger and James are collaborating to narrate the tale of a bluntly truthful podcaster and a sophisticated dating mentor who team up to conduct a couples’ retreat, despite their contrasting perspectives. In a hint at the main characters, the director previewed their distinct personalities.
This individual is expressing critique towards society yet yearns for seclusion, but paradoxically, he thrives on social media platforms, stirring up debates. In contrast, she portrays authenticity, yet maintains a polished image; however, there are numerous untruths she perpetuates to uphold her own message.

10 Things I Hate About You may not have been a major blockbuster in 1999, but it has since evolved into a cult favorite. The film captures the essence of ’90s culture beautifully (the soundtrack serves as an excellent snapshot of that era), and today, it appears as if it’s a timeless movie with a witty script and well-developed characters that are always enjoyable to rewatch.
In the story, Kat, the main character and Patrick Verona’s romantic interest, was a bold teenager who likely resonated with younger viewers at the time. During the interview, Junger emphasized this character, but didn’t mention if there would be a similar character in the forthcoming sequel.
