Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us season 2, episode 6.
It was delightful to spot Tony Dalton in The Last of Us season 2, episode 6, yet it’s unfortunate that we might not see him on the show again. Dalton is among several unexpected guest stars who have added an enjoyable twist to The Last of Us season 2. A few weeks back, Josh Peck made an appearance as a FEDRA soldier who met his end at the hands of Isaac. Naturally, Dalton is renowned for his menacing portrayal of Lalo Salamanca in Better Call Saul, but he takes on a distinct character here.
In contrast to Peck’s character who had a minor, forgettable role, Dalton’s character holds significant importance as he portrays Joel and Tommy’s father. The TV series, “The Last of Us,” is known for starting its episodes with intriguing cold opens that either relate to the upcoming storyline or hint at future events. The opening scene of “The Last of Us” season 2, episode 6, a flashback depicting an argument between young Joel and his strict father in 1983, accomplishes both these tasks. Dalton was an excellent choice for this role, but it’s likely we won’t see him again in the series.
Tony Dalton Plays Joel & Tommy’s Dad In The Last Of Us Season 2’s 1983 Flashback
Joel & Tommy’s Dad Was A Strict Cop
Except for its concluding scenes that unfold amidst rainy Seattle, The Last of Us season 2, episode 6 primarily delves into flashbacks. A significant portion of these flashbacks depict Ellie’s birthdays from recent years; however, one particular flashback travels as far back as 1983 to portray Joel and Tommy as teenagers in Austin, Texas. In this instance, Tommy frets about his father meting out punishment upon his return due to a marijuana transaction that soured, but Joel steps up to take the blame (and the subsequent beating) for him.
Upon their father’s arrival, it transpires that he’s a police officer – portrayed by Tony Dalton. Joel tries to deceive his dad, claiming the altercation was his fault, but his father has already learned from the officers present that Tommy was the culprit. Joel prevents his father from assaulting Tommy and they engage in a sincere conversation about how Joel’s grandfather was just as abusive, if not more so, than their current actions. Despite repeating many of the same mistakes, Joel admits he’s been striving to improve for the sake of his own sons.
How Joel’s Porch Scene With Ellie Connected Back To Tony Dalton’s Flashback Scene
Joel Repeats Some Of His Dad’s Wisdom To His Own Kid
At the end of the episode, Ellie engages Joel in a conversation on his porch. This conversation combines two scenes from the game. In the series, Joel admits to his actions at the hospital and Ellie vows to make an effort to forgive him within the same scene. This scene connects back to the opening where we saw how easily Joel could deceive his loved ones, particularly his father’s death scenario, and how quickly they can discern his lies.
On the porch, Joel shares with Ellie that if she one day becomes a parent (which we’ve learned will happen), he wishes she could “strive to surpass me just a bit.” This is the same sentiment his father shared with him during the 1983 flashback. Joel’s father managed to do better than his own dad, and Joel did the same, now hoping that Ellie can outdo him as well.
Tony Dalton’s Casting Is Great, But It’s Doubtful That He Will Return In The Last Of Us
He’s Probably Just A One-Off Special Guest Star
Dalton was ideally suited for the role of Joel and Tommy’s father, as he possesses the captivating charm needed to convincingly be the father of Pedro Pascal and Gabriel Luna. Regrettably, it seems unlikely that we will get to witness his performance again, given that his role appeared to be a brief guest appearance. However, if there is no compelling reason to revisit Joel and Tommy’s childhood in future seasons of The Last of Us, it appears we may not see him again.
