Fans of the TV series S.W.A.T., along with the actors and crew, have experienced as many highs and lows as any show I can recall, with CBS cancelling the action-drama for the third time, only to bring it back from cancellation twice previously. Despite persistent protests from viewers and even one actor’s belief in its revival, the show concluded production in March and aired an inconclusive series finale on May 16. Just two days later, Sony Pictures Television greenlit a spinoff.
That’s right, the military drama that could is somehow returning to the small screen once again, only this time in a brand new way, as a spinoff that’ll go by the name of S.W.A.T. Exiles. It was a wild shock to end the weekend on, especially after star Shemar Moore posted a touching farewell to the dedicated fanbase. It appears that may have been a ruse of sorts, as the actor later dropped an Instagram post with the grand reveal of Hondo’s big return.
As a movie enthusiast, the infectious joy radiating from his beaming grin is undeniable. I could almost feel it when he broke the news to me, initially expressing it with a simple yet elated exclamation:
How’s it going, everyone? It’s me again. What a fantastic day! Shemar Moore has just arrived. Remember who I am – eight years of dedication and strength. Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrison here. Get ready, my friends, fans, and lovely ladies, from all corners of the globe who have stood by us for the past eight years: firstly, thank you, thank you. We wouldn’t be here without your support over these years. I know it’s disheartening that we’ve been canceled, but hold on tight because the battle isn’t over. And when we keep fighting, what happens? We win!
In simpler terms, Shemar Moore’s character, Hondo Harrison, was canceled from the show multiple times in the past, yet he keeps returning to our screens. This is not a criticism of the show itself, but rather an observation that Hondo’s comebacks are so frequent they could almost earn him a special “persistent presence” badge.
In any case, the beloved actor continued, saying:
The original S.W.A.T. team and their leader Hondo won’t be disappearing from our screens anytime soon. A fresh take on S.W.A.T., titled “S.W.A.T. Exiles,” is heading your way. Yes, I confirmed it. Get ready for “S.W.A.T. Exiles” this summer, and Hondo will be back in charge. The original S.W.A.T. team will also return to duty this summer. So, let’s make some noise about it – S.W.A.T. and Hondo are coming back to the forefront!
In the title of the post, Moore emphasizes that Hondo returns not only to guide, but to reconstruct, and hints at the addition of fresh team members. However, there’s no margin for mistakes when it comes to the show’s characters.
Below are some points we have learned from Sony Pictures TV’s significant unveiling at this year’s LA Screenings event, as reported by Variety:
1. The company is developing a new series based on the classic movie “Ghostbusters.”
2. They are also working on an adaptation of the popular video game “The Last of Us” into a television show.
3. A sequel to the hit series “Breaking Bad,” titled “Better Call Saul,” is set to return for its sixth and final season in 2022.
4. The highly anticipated spin-off of “Young Sheldon,” called “Young Sheldon: Cooper’s Big Bang,” is slated to premiere in the fall of 2021.
5. Sony Pictures TV has also greenlit a new drama series called “The Lincoln Lawyer.”
- S.W.A.T. Exiles earned a 10-episode series order from the studio.
- Production on the spinoff is set to begin this summer in Los Angeles.
- CBS is not currently confirmed to be the spinoff’s home, as Sony Pictures TV will be shopping it to various broadcast and cable networks, as well as streaming services.
- Lucifer and The Brothers Sun vet Jason Ning will be handling showrunner duties, and will also serve as an executive producer alongside Shemar Moore.
- Sony aims to find “the right homes and partners” for S.W.A.T. Exiles that will not only appease the already existing fanbase, but will also “attract new viewers.”
- Sony noted in the announcement that it’s “preserving jobs for the 200-person local production crew” who worked on the original series for its eight-season run.
It’s quite evident that Sony TV’s executives are confident that the spinoff will likely thrive like its predecessor, and I can’t wait to see where it goes. Logically speaking, it seems reasonable for the series Exiles to be accessible with the same Paramount+ subscription that grants access to S.W.A.T., but if the aim is also to attract new viewers, a change in location might be on the horizon.
The possibility of when viewers can watch the new series depends on whether it gets renewed by CBS again. If this happens, there’s a good chance it could air before the 2025 TV schedule concludes; however, this wouldn’t be feasible if it gets chosen by Netflix instead, as they require the entire season to be filmed and ready for release before scheduling a premiere date.
As we await further updates, allow the smiles of Shemar Moore to be your compass, navigating you through any troubles that your day may present.

Jason Ning is additionally collaborating with Sony Pictures TV on a television series adaptation of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” based on author Wang Dulu’s “Crane-Iron” book series. Given his previous work on “The Expanse” and “Mrs. Davis,” I have high expectations that the action in “S.W.A.T. Exiles” will be equally spectacular, if not even more so. Fingers crossed that Moore provides updates to keep us informed about each step of the production process.
