Norwegian Berlinale Winner Dag Johan Haugerud Named Jury Head for Venice’s Giornate Degli Autori

Norwegian film director Dag Johan Haugerud, who recently won the Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear for his movie “Dreams,” has been appointed as the jury president for Giornate Degli Autori, an independent section within the Venice Film Festival. This section is supported by Italian filmmaker associations ANAC and 100autori.

This appointment marks a return of sorts for Haugerud, as his film “Barn” (also known as “Beware of Children”) had its world premiere in the Giornate degli Autori competition back in 2019, which was also Haugerud’s international debut.

Speaking about his appointment, Haugerud said, “I am delighted and eager to take on this esteemed role as president of this year’s Giornate degli Autori jury. Giornate holds a special place in my heart due to its passionate and discerning programming, and the fact that it carefully selects only 10 films based on their innovation, originality, and independence.

Gaia Furrer, the artistic director, commented: “Returning to Giornate after six years since the unforgettable premiere of ‘Beware of Children’, we are amazed by the growth of a filmmaker whose ‘Sex, Dreams, Love’ trilogy was honored with a Golden Bear Award at the Berlinale. His cinema is timeless yet deeply relevant to our current era, stemming from a profound philosophical curiosity about what it means to be human – our ambitions, vulnerabilities, and flaws.” In essence, she emphasized that art, literature, and cinema offer not only intellectual and political contemplation but also the potential for sensory expansion and societal change.
