How does a star determine whether to partner with a well-known brand? Is their agreement influenced by factors such as the scale of their involvement, the size of the compensation, or the allure of the brand’s prestige?
For Tilda Swinton, every project she undertakes is a way of satisfying her insatiable curiosity, which she believes shapes and guides all her work. “It feels very intuitive to me, and in a sense, quite similar to agreeing to star in a film,” Swinton explained during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter held in London on Friday. “There’s no distinction between this and having a discussion with [writer-director] Apichatpong Weerasethakul, a conversation that began long ago and culminated in a film titled Memoria. Life often presents us with individuals whose conversations leave us inspired but unfinished, and we simply want to continue those interactions.
As a devoted admirer, I find myself sharing the exciting news that I’ve been invited by Dom Pérignon, the esteemed champagne brand under LVMH, to be part of their new creative endeavor titled “Creation is an Eternal Journey.” This prestigious group includes talented individuals such as Zoë Kravitz, Anderson .Paak, Iggy Pop, Takashi Murakami, chef Clare Smyth, and dancer/choreographer Alexander Ekman. The pair behind this project are Vincent Chaperon, the Chef de Cave (head winemaker), and Jacques Giraco, the chief marketing officer of Dom Pérignon.

Swinton refers to the top-tier Dom Pérignon as Vincent and Jacques. He explains that he collaborates with designers in a similar manner as he would with Chanel or Haider Ackermann. The dialogue revolves around creating something – be it a film, dress, or champagne – that evokes a certain reaction, stirs up emotions, influences our mindset as creators, and ultimately communicates an attitude.
Kravitz expressed her fascination with the heritage of Dom Pérignon, named after the 17th-century French Benedictine monk who played a significant role in the invention of sparkling wine. His historic abbey now belongs to the brand. She added that she was captivated by the concept of this project encompassing creation in its entirety and assembling a carefully curated group of creative individuals. As she put it to THR, “It was such a diverse gathering, so being part of it was not only an honor but also an obvious choice.
Swinton and Kravitz joined “Creation is an Eternal Journey” primarily due to their affinity for the project’s collective spirit, a term reminiscent of the unique blends used in champagne production. Swinton expressed her delight, stating, “It’s a truly stunning embodiment of this concept.” After visiting the Dom Pérignon team in France’s Champagne region, she delved into the winemaking process. She found the team to be deeply thoughtful, taking their time and being meticulous, which she found incredibly refreshing.

The recently unveiled campaign, captured by American photographer Collier Schorr, combines portraits of each artist, some with and without a Dom Pérignon bottle, along with a short movie featuring the stars sharing their insights on champagne and the creative process. In the film, Murakami comments, “Creation has the power to alter history,” while Iggy Pop adds, “Creation is a grand expression of love.” The final scene features Swinton reaching towards the sky and saying, “It’s like touching the stars,” a phrase that symbolizes the phenomenon called “champagne flow” – when gases explode in space, resembling bursting champagne bubbles following the opening of a bottle.

According to Giraco, we aimed to bring together individuals from various cultural aspects, such as artists, musicians, and a chef. These people were not only harmonious but also distinct. What stood out to me was that they all shared an eagerness to meet Vincent, and I was genuinely amazed by this shared interest, and even more so by their collective enthusiasm.

The ongoing process of creation aligns with the debut of four fresh wine editions – among them the 2018 vintage, which marks Chaperon’s first since assuming the role of Chef de Cave in 2019. This significant milestone was commemorated through a three-day showcase and lavish launch event held at London’s Tate Modern museum. Besides the campaign’s leading figures, guests included Damien Lewis, Emma Corrin, Alicia Vikander, Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell, and renowned milliner Stephen Jones. To begin the evening’s festivities, Swinton recited an original poem that encapsulated thoughts such as “Embrace human vulnerability” and “Conquer cruelty.”
The creative process continues in harmony with the introduction of four new wines – including the 2018 vintage, Chaperon’s first since becoming Chef de Cave in 2019. This notable event was honored through a three-day presentation and grand opening gala at London’s Tate Modern museum. Besides the key figures of the campaign, invitees included Damien Lewis, Emma Corrin, Alicia Vikander, Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell, and celebrated milliner Stephen Jones. Swinton initiated the night’s entertainment by reciting an original poem that conveyed ideas like “Celebrate human resilience” and “Overcome harshness.

Next up was Anderson .Paak taking over the DJ booth, ramping up the energy level for the night. Swinton and Kravitz were seen dancing continuously, whereas Corrin found a secluded spot to chat with friends. Lewis, accompanied by his girlfriend Alison Mosshart from The Kills, explored the exhibition. However, it didn’t take long before Mosshart and Iggy Pop began discussing their potential future music collaboration – perhaps planning their next project? All attendees agreed that champagne symbolizes celebration, reminiscing about their initial experiences with it. Actor-director Kravitz recalled his first glass, which he had during his high school graduation. His father, Lenny Kravitz, is well-known for his love of champagne and longstanding relationship with Dom Perignon, making that the likely occasion when he shared his first sip with his son.
Swinton’s statement: “I adore it! My initial recollections of champagne border on something like child mistreatment, I must confess. I recall being at weddings as a child and seeing all those glasses of champagne on the table. My nanny thought that adding a cube of sugar to a glass of champagne made it suitable for children. But isn’t that just a champagne cocktail? She said, ‘Let me go fetch some sugar, and then it will be safe for you,’ because she believed the sugar turned it into a carbonated drink. So, we were probably quite tipsy at ages five, six, seven or eight.
Currently, Swinton finds herself reminiscing fondly about a particular memory. Her recent studies at Hautvillers and her involvement in the campaign have given her an unforgettable encounter that she holds dear. “The abbey exudes a palpable aura of wonder,” Swinton remarks. “That’s why the ordinary language in our small production feels just right — in other situations, expressing something like ‘It’s as if you’re touching the stars” might be challenging, but here it seems entirely natural. It truly is extraordinary.
