As a fervent admirer of Director Spike Lee’s work, I’m thrilled to share that his upcoming collaboration with Denzel Washington, titled “Highest 2 Lowest,” will mark their last joint project. This gripping film, fresh from its screening at Cannes, is an innovative reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s classic, “High and Low.” Unlike the original, Lee’s version transports the story from Japan to the pulsating New York City music scene, where a powerful music tycoon finds himself ensnared in a chilling ransom plot.
Joining Denzel Washington in this star-studded cast are Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, A$AP Rocky, and Aubrey Joseph. “Highest 2 Lowest” will grace the big screen on August 22, with Apple TV+ streaming it from September 5. I can hardly wait!
According to Deadline, Lee discusses his extended partnership with Washington. Reminiscing about their past collaboration, Lee expressed disbelief that so much time had passed since then. During the making of “Highest 2 Lowest,” however, Lee and Washington were in perfect sync, as if they hadn’t skipped a beat. With Washington’s recent retirement remarks, Lee feels that “this is it,” implying that “Highest 2 Lowest” might be their last film together. Here’s the full quote from Lee:
It came as a surprise to Denzel and me that our last movie, “Inside Man,” was released eighteen years ago. It seemed just like yesterday, but we never faltered in our steps.
As a film enthusiast, I’m convinced that this is it – number five. Despite his recent business transaction, he’s hinted at retirement. Over these five movies, they’ve built an enduring legacy that stands tall in the industry.
What This Means For Denzel Washington And Spike Lee
Washington’s Retirement Commments Have Been Happening For Years
Washington and Lee have collaborated occasionally over the past 35 years. Their initial project together was “Mo’ Better Blues,” a romance film focusing on jazz trumpeter Bleek Gilliam. To date, they’ve worked on five films in total, with their latest being “Highest 2 Lowest.” Three of these projects emerged in the ’90s, but there has been a significant break between their last movie, “Inside Man,” and the Kurosawa remake set for release this year.
Ever since I made those retirement comments years ago, people have been asking me about my future plans. Going as far back as December 2021, I mentioned that there wasn’t much left for me to do as an actor, hinting at potentially wrapping up my career. In 2024, I caused quite a buzz when I insinuated that I would retire after my upcoming films, but later clarified that I would slow down and only accept exceptional projects, without completely halting my work.
