Shemar Moore on Moving Ahead With ‘SWAT’ Spinoff Without Former Castmembers: “Nobody Likes Change”

Shemar Moore speaks about the upcoming SWAT spinoff that doesn’t include his previous co-stars, expressing, “Change may not be welcomed, but it’s essential for growth. You can’t achieve success unless you’re prepared to face challenges.

The lead actor from the CBS series SWAT, who starred for eight seasons before its termination, posted a long video on Instagram on Monday, admitting he could face criticism from both the industry and fans due to the announcement of SWAT Exiles, where he reprises his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.

Moore spoke highly of his ex-colleagues from the SWAT team, yet he clarified why he was venturing into the spinoff solo by likening himself to a star quarterback in American football – a role model often referred to as “the Tom Brady of SWAT.

He wasn’t boasting; he was stating a fact. He is the quarterback, and his name is Shemar Moore, also known as Hondo. However, he had a robust team, a tight-knit group, a family if you will, and it would be unfair not to express my affection, admiration, and gratitude towards them. I want them to know that I love them, I respect them, and I appreciate them.

Moore went on to say, “My family is with me forever. Just as in sports, a player like Tom Brady may stay as the quarterback, but others are traded – tight ends, running backs, receivers. But the team continues to play with their quarterback and I am that person. So proud, so grateful. I won’t apologize for anything. I’ve worked hard for 31 years to be where I am, and I’m thrilled about the future. I’m happy that SWAT gets to keep playing.

On Sunday, Sony Pictures Television confirmed that they have approved a spinoff focusing on the crime procedural, where Moore’s character comes out of mandatory retirement to head an experimental SWAT team consisting of unproven, unpredictable rookie recruits. At present, no other cast members from the original SWAT series have expressed intentions to rejoin for this new show.

Moore added in his video that SWAT Exiles is set to start filming this summer.

Although SWAT wrapped up its eighth and last season, it initially ended following its sixth season in 2023, only to be brought back twice more. After CBS terminated the show for the second occasion in March, Moore has been actively seeking a new platform for the series.
