Neon secures the right to distribute the political thriller titled “The Secret Agent,” penned by writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho, within North America.
In Cannes on May 18th, the film titled “The Portuguese Language Pic” – which depicts a tech whiz revisiting his hometown in 1977 to meet his young son and escape the country – made its debut in competition. Later this year, Neon intends to distribute it for screening across North America.
The main cast of The Secret Agent includes Wagner Moura, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leon, Carlos Francisco, Alice Carvalho, and Hermila Gueses.
1977, nestled within the vibrant city of Recife, Brazil, unfolds a gripping thriller. The story centers around Marcelo (Moura), an expert in technology, who finds himself pursued by ruthless contract killers and relentless federal officials. In a desperate bid to reconnect with his son, he arrives in Recife during the bustling carnival week. However, the city proves to be less of a sanctuary and more of a labyrinth that seems unwilling or unable to provide him the safety he seeks.
The “Secret Agent” marks the Brazilian filmmaker’s third movie to debut in competition at Cannes, following “Aquarius” in 2016 and “Bacurau,” which he collaborated on the script and direction with Juliano Dornelles, winning the Jury Prize in 2019.
In 2017, Filho held the position as the jury head for the Critics’ Week segment at Cannes, while his second documentary titled “Pictures of Ghosts” was first shown in the Special Screenings area during the 2023 festival.
The Secret Agent welcomes back Moura to Portuguese-speaking film industry following a long hiatus. This production is a collaborative effort by Emilie Lesclaux, Nathanaël Karmitz, Elisha Karmitz, Fionnuala Jamison, Olivier Barbier, Leontine Petit, Erik Glijnis, Fred Burke and Sol Bondy.
As an avid cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that this captivating production is a joint effort by Cinemasópio, MK Productions, Lemming Film, and One Two Films. For global distribution, we have MK2 Films on board, ensuring this film reaches cinemas worldwide.
In the negotiation process, Neon’s Sarah Colvin and Jeff Deutchman worked together, while Fionnuala Jamison, representing MK2 Films, advocated on behalf of the filmmakers for the distribution deal.
