SPOILERS are ahead for The Four Seasons, now streaming with a Netflix subscription.
Just a few weeks have passed since Tina Fey’s The Four Seasons debuted on Netflix, and I’m among the countless viewers who eagerly awaited its arrival in the 2025 TV lineup. With such widespread popularity, it’s no surprise that it’s been renewed for a second season, leaving me thrilled about where this dramedy might go next. Unfortunately, Steve Carell’s character met his end before the season concluded, making it unlikely he’d reprise his role in the future. I was keen to know how the actor felt about this development, and his response did not fall short of expectations.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter regarding the surprising finale of “The Four Seasons,” Tina Fey disclosed that Steve Carell shared her dismay over the fate of his character, Nick, just as much. This is how she remembered their sentiments:
(Note: I’ve rephrased your sentence to make it a bit more conversational and easier to read.)
In simpler terms, he expressed something like, ‘Why is this always happening to my character?’ Initially, I wasn’t aware of a similar event in The Morning Show when we initially proposed the idea, so I take responsibility for that oversight. However, I stood firm on the decision.
It seemed to me that Steve Carell, being so well-liked and versatile, might take the news of the plot twist in stride since it would provide him with more time for other jobs. However, I was mistaken as he shared my dismay upon learning about it. To add insult to injury, his character on Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, Mitch Kessler, met an untimely end at the close of Season 2 as well.
According to Tina Fey, she wasn’t aware that Steve Carell had previous experience with a TV character’s death before when they decided to write off Nick. It became even more challenging for her when she informed him about the fate of his character. Interestingly, I’m astonished by the fact that not just one, but two, writers chose to end the actor’s character in their series. Tina Fey explained their reasoning behind this decision with these words:
In our perspective during production, we aimed for an authentic, relatable narrative – a tale that resonated with everyday life experiences. It wasn’t about extraordinary events; instead, it was about the things that happen to ordinary people like us. Our goal was to depict the lives of these characters accurately. As you reach your 50s, the idea of losing a friend becomes less fantastical and more realistic. Therefore, we wanted this series to have significant human consequences, and the death of a character serving as a catalyst for the group to unite seemed fitting.
It caught me off guard when his character’s death occurred towards the end of The Four Seasons, as he played such a pivotal role in the series, with numerous plotlines revolving around him at that point.
During a ski vacation with his younger companion Ginny, he was experiencing some turbulence due to his unease among her circle of friends. After speaking fondly with his long-standing group of friends, he found himself engrossed in an iPad game, something he had previously mocked his ex-wife for playing. However, the narrative veered off to underscore that life’s unpredictability can bring sudden tragedy, regardless of one’s current circumstances.
Although Nick is absent in Season 2, it’s expected that he’ll play a significant role due to the cliffhanger at the end of Season 1, where Ginny revealed she’s pregnant with his child. We’re curious if the narrative will delve deeper into Ginny next season. It’s unfortunate we won’t get to see more of Steve Carell portraying Nick.
