‘Frustrated’ Karan Johar questions ‘why we get slotted’ as he admits to breaking barriers with Homebound

In more casual terms, the movie titled “Homebound,” featuring Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Vishal Jehtwa, has recently made India proud. During its screening at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, it received a 9-minute standing ovation from the audience. Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and produced by Karan Johar‘s Dharma Productions, this film has broken some barriers, as an openly frustrated KJo admitted in an interview.

In a recent chat with Variety, I, much like Karan Johar, expressed my discontent with being categorized or ‘slotted.’ I’ve been fortunate enough to produce anthologies such as Ajeeb Daastaans and Geeli Pucchi, which was directed by none other than Neeraj. Moreover, I’ve pushed the boundaries of cinema with productions like Kapoor & Sons and Kill, both of which were showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023.

As a devoted supporter, I’d like to share that KJo frequently chooses movies that intentionally push limits and redefine Dharma’s essence. It’s not just about going with the flow of popular culture, but also exploring profound and meaningful cinematic territories.

During the same interview, Karan Johar spoke candidly about supporting Homebound and his reasons for doing so. He stated, “Aside from Neeraj, there’s also Anurag. When it comes to them, I was immediately on board.

Previously, actor Ishaan Khatter posted on Instagram expressing his anticipation about rejoining Karan Johar and Dharma Productions after a gap of seven years for the film titled Homebound. Looking back at the project, he expressed that it was both emotionally intense and demanding, one that stood out to him as unique and special right from its inception.

Besides expressing his delight over the movie’s trip to Cannes, Ishaan viewed it as a fulfillment of a long-held dream. He attributed this success to careful planning, determination, kindness, and authenticity. Moreover, he praised director Neeraj Ghaywan as an exceptional artist, admiring him for not only having vision but also empathy, which made one of the most cherished phases in Ishaan’s filmmaking career possible.
