He’s chosen to embrace his roots by adopting the surname Prateik Smita Patil. In an interview on Varinder Chawla’s YouTube channel, I, Prateik Smita Patil, revealed that following my mother’s passing, a custody battle ensued, which was ultimately won by her family. Shortly after, there were discussions about my last name, and I became known as Babbar at that time. I mentioned in the interview that my passport displays my full name as Prateik Smit Babbar, leading some of my schoolmates to assume I was from a Christian background due to my middle name, Smit.

In his Bollywood debut with “Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na,” the actor known as Sikandar was initially credited as Prateik Babbar. However, he later chose to go by simply ‘Prateik,’ stating, “Initially, my name in my first film was Prateik Babbar. Then I began questioning ‘Who is my mother? Who is my father?’ This thought led me to reflect, ‘I don’t wish to be Patil or Babbar; I want to be just Prateik.’

As a fervent admirer, allow me to recount how Prateik candidly disclosed his deep-seated resentment towards his parents. Consequently, his choice to forego a surname was born out of this bitterness. He further expressed that he yearned for no association with them, confessing, “They’ve inflicted pain upon me throughout my life. I choose not to be their kin and so, I became known simply as Prateik.

In a candid conversation, the actor explained why he adopted the name Prateik Smita Patil. His wife, Priya Banerjee, had proposed this name change as a tribute to his late mother and actress, Smita Patil, who made significant sacrifices for him. Now, after incorporating her name into his own, Prateik feels whole.

For those not familiar, Smita Patil tragically died only two weeks following the birth of her son Prateik. Her death was due to complications arising during childbirth.
