Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming movie F1, starring Brad Pitt, is rapidly gaining attention as one of the most eagerly awaited films of 2025. In this movie, Pitt plays an aging driver who joins Mercedes’ team for the new Formula 1 season. The previews showcase thrilling racing sequences that were primarily captured on set. The recent promotional material also acknowledges the car-loving essence of the film by making a nod to a renowned anime production, featuring one of the most memorable racing scenes ever depicted in cinema.
The latest F1 poster was recently posted by Dolby Cinema’s official account (previously known as Twitter), and anime enthusiasts were delighted with the new advertisement. This understated poster showcases Brad Pitt exiting his Formula 1 vehicle, which is partially hidden at the top of the poster, accompanied by the film’s logo prominently displayed at the bottom. At first sight, it seems like a typical minimalist poster. However, eagle-eyed anime fans swiftly recognized an unexpected reference to Akira.
Akira, a movie adapted from Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga, is frequently recognized as one of the greatest anime films ever made, along with Studio Ghibli’s works, Ghost in the Shell, and Perfect Blue. Not only does it offer stunning visuals of a future Tokyo influenced by cyberpunk, but it’s also renowned for its thrilling chase sequences. The protagonist, Kaneda, is recognized by his distinctive red motorcycle, an image seen on the film’s posters that have since become iconic. The latest F1 poster takes inspiration from this classic Akira poster featuring Kaneda striding towards his bike.
‘F1’ Is One of the Most Expensive Movies Ever Made
Apple TV is known for making daring financial moves in its productions. Previously, it has supported the creation of films like Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Downwind,” “Blitz,” “Napoleon,” and “Tetris” – projects that other leading streaming platforms might have avoided. While not every endeavor has been successful, Apple TV is persisting with its risk-taking approach.
The production of F1 significantly escalates the financial risk associated with Apple, as it’s reportedly one of the costliest films ever produced, with an estimated budget surpassing $300 million. However, it should be noted that it doesn’t hold the title of the most expensive movie; that honor goes to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which cost approximately $447 million, and Avatar: The Way of Water, with a budget between $350-430 million, isn’t far behind. Nonetheless, a budget of $300 million is still an astounding figure for a film, especially given its subject matter being the most expensive sport worldwide.
In addition to Brad Pitt, the cast of F1 includes Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Simone Ashley, and Callie Cooke. As you may know, this movie also boasts cameos from well-known Formula One racers like Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and Carlos Sainz Jr. F1 will premiere in theaters on June 25th. While a release date for streaming on Apple TV+ hasn’t been announced yet.
