Mubi Nabs Oliver Laxe’s Cannes Pic ‘Sirat’ For Multiple Territories

Mubi secures another award-winning title at Cannes by acquiring the rights for “Sirat” in Italy, Turkey, and India.

The agreement with film production company The Match Factory will result in the arthouse streaming service acquiring the fourth feature film of the French-born Spanish director. This film, his first to be shown in the Cannes competition, is titled Sirat. The movie revolves around a father and son who join a nomadic rave group in the Moroccan desert, seeking one final celebration. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s a “techno-infused contemplation on death and grief.

A father (Sergi López) and his son embark on a search for the missing daughter/sister (Mar), last seen at a rave in the mountains of southern Morocco. Despite the setting of non-stop electronic music and an unusual feeling of liberation, they distribute her picture repeatedly. As hope dwindles, they persist and join a group of ravers bound for one final party in the desert. As they delve further into the scorching wilderness, their journey compels them to face their personal limitations.

The film’s cast includes Lopez, Bruno Nuñez, Stefania Gadda, Joshua Liam Henderson, Tonin Janvier, Jade Oukid, and Richard Bellamy. The production team consists of Pedro Almodóvar, Agustín Almodóvar, Esther García, Xavi Font, Laxe, Oriol Maymó, Mani Mortazavi, Andrea Queralt, and Domingo Corral.

In addition, Mubi has obtained the rights to screen Jafar Panahi’s film “It Was Just an Accident” across Latin America, the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, Turkey, and India. Moreover, they have secured German director Mascha Schilinski’s second feature film, titled “Sound of Falling,” for distribution in North America, the U.K., Ireland, India, and Turkey as well.

As a gaming enthusiast, I recently scored some major cinematic treasures! In select markets, I’ve secured the rights to “The Secret Agent,” a masterpiece from writer and director Kleber Mendonça Filho. I also grabbed “Sentimental Value,” Joachim Trier’s latest masterwork, and “Die, My Love,” starring the dynamic duo of Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, all for an impressive $24 million! Now, it’s time to enjoy the show!
