The unexpected postponement of “Avengers: Doomsday” has left a significant void in the release schedule, a gap that Marvel Studios hasn’t intentionally left since their initial phase of films. Normally, movies within the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) come out very close to each other, often with an interval of around 6 months (occasionally even less). However, it seems like Marvel enthusiasts will have a prolonged wait after the launch of “Fantastic Four: First Steps” in July.
The latest news reveals that the premiere date for “Avengers: Doomsday” has been shifted from May 1st, 2026, to December 18th, 2026. Similarly, the release of “Avengers: Secret Wars,” initially set for May 7th, 2027, is now on December 17th, 2027. Consequently, this delay in “Avengers: Doomsday” will result in one of the longest breaks between Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, although it could potentially be a welcome respite for fans.
Fantastic Four To Spider-Man 4 Is The MCU’s Biggest Non-Covid Gap Since 2010
Not Since The Gap Between The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2
It’s important to note that delays in Marvel movies during the global pandemic are a rare occurrence. Given the unprecedented chaos worldwide, the entire film industry, including Marvel Studios, experienced considerable disruption. Understandably, some of their projects had to be postponed or rescheduled due to factors beyond their control.
In relation to typical Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) releases, it has been quite some time since we last saw a gap this large. The last instance was during Phase 1, with “The Incredible Hulk” in 2008 and “Iron Man 2” in 2010. Interestingly enough, the upcoming film “Fantastic Four: First Steps” is scheduled for July 25th this year, while “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” isn’t set to hit theaters until July 31st of next year. This means that Marvel Studios will intentionally not release any new movies in theaters for approximately a year.
Why The MCU Has Such A Big Release Gap Coming Up
More Time To Get It Right (Among Other Reasons)
It seems that Marvel Studios might be considering pushing back the release of the next two Avengers movies for a variety of reasons. Primarily, this move could provide them with additional time for filming and especially post-production work, such as visual effects and CGI. In other words, they are trying to “extend the runway” in order to achieve higher quality results. This approach has become increasingly important for Marvel Studios, given their recent focus on enhancing the overall quality of their projects.
The delays align with Disney and Marvel Studios’ recent statements suggesting a slower pace in their release schedule, prioritizing quality over quantity, which has been a challenge for the MCU since the launch of Disney+ in 2019. Moreover, moving both Avengers movies from May to December seems strategic for Disney, as it would reduce internal competition, especially with upcoming Star Wars releases such as The Mandalorian and Grogu on May 22nd, 2026, and Star Wars: Starfighter slated for May 28th, 2027.
The MCU’s Release Gap Should Benefit Marvel
Less Fatigue, And More Time To Build Hype
Though some Marvel enthusiasts might feel frustrated about the extended wait for upcoming crossovers, this delay could prove beneficial for the franchise in several ways. It provides additional production time to fine-tune the quality of the films, lessen audience fatigue, and give fans a chance to catch up on previous MCU projects. Moreover, it offers Marvel Studios an opportunity to intensify the anticipation for “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars.
Avengers: Doomsday is now releasing in theaters on December 18th, 2026.
