Watching Netflix’s “Fear Street: Prom Queen” has given fans a chance to relive the feelings of high school, both on-screen and off-screen.
The fourth installment of the slasher series inspired by R.L. Stine’s books started streaming on Friday. This film, penned and directed by Matt Palmer, features India Fowler, Suzanna Son, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Ariana Greenblatt, and Rebecca Ablack in the main roles. The story unfolds in 1988, focusing on a group of teen girls who mysteriously vanish from the popular crowd at Shadyside High School.
Between May 17th and 19th, Netflix arranged a spine-tingling prom event at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. On the 18th, Palmer and the cast were also present at the Shadyside High Senior Prom ’88 experience, which offered visitors a chance to explore various terrifying locations like the gymnasium, lockers, restrooms, and other spots designed to scare fans.
According to Netflix’s vice president of film marketing, Jonathan Helfgot, our objective was to make the experience feel just like what fans adore about the Fear Street movies – heart-stopping surprises, an engaging mystery, and non-stop entertainment all around.
Previously, Netflix’s Fear Street films were set in different decades. The setting of Prom Queen perfectly aligns with the 80s theme for this retro-style event. The film series kicked off with Fear Street Part One: 1994, which was released in July 2021.
In each movie, we took great care to accurately depict a unique time period, specifically Shadyside High School from 1988. This way, viewers could truly step into the story’s world. The outcome was enchanting. Whether it was joining in a spontaneous dance battle or receiving a stern scolding from a strict teacher, everyone enjoyed experiencing high school life in the ’80s, if only for a night – even those who found themselves fleeing from a janitor’s closet pursued by a maniac with an axe.
In a critique for The Hollywood Reporter, reviewer Lovia Gyarkye stated that Fear Street Part One: 1994 maintains a consistent tone and atmosphere similar to its source material, respecting the delicate blend of horror and comedy that has captivated numerous young readers over the years in Stine’s work. Additionally, it acknowledges contemporary horror greats such as Scream.
