Jason Bateman’s Gritty Crime Drama Will Cure Your Landman Withdrawal

Despite getting a second season, Taylor Sheridan’s series “Landman” is yet to return, but in the meantime, fans of crime drama can enjoy Jason Bateman’s four-season thriller on Netflix. The confirmation for “Landman” season 2 came shortly after the finale of season 1, however, it won’t be out until much later. In the interim, Taylor Sheridan has other shows and films to work on, which will take time for production, post-production, and promotion. It’s anticipated that “Landman” season 2 might not air until early 2026.

For several months, if not years, there’s a noticeable gap in many viewers’ must-watch list due to the absence of “Landman.” No other show can perfectly emulate the unique mix of sarcastic wit, family drama, edge-of-your-seat crime thrills, and Taylor Sheridan’s deep affection for the American West that “Landman” offers. While other shows by Taylor Sheridan, such as “Yellowstone” and its spinoffs, are excellent in their own right, they don’t quite capture Billy Bob Thornton’s humor or the gritty portrayal of the oil industry that “Landman” delivers. However, a 2017 crime thriller starring Jason Bateman on Netflix comes the closest to being a suitable substitute for “Landman” as we eagerly await season 2.

Ozark Is A Fantastic Gritty Crime Drama Similar To Landman

Ozark Also Follows A Family Man Who’s Good At His Job That Gets Wrapped Up With The Cartel

If you enjoyed the show “Landman” for its exploration of crime and intricate family relationships, then you’ll likely find Netflix’s “Ozark” equally appealing. The series centers around Marty Byrde (played by Jason Bateman) and his family who are compelled to move to Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks when Marty is tasked with laundering $500 million using his financial expertise. At the same time, he strives to maintain the integrity of his family. Notably, Marty appears quite parallel to Tommy Norris: both are proficient in their professions and find themselves unwillingly involved in cartel activities, while juggling a precarious domestic life.

Although both shows, Ozark and Landman, share the genre of gritty crime dramas, they each have instances of dark humor that make them unique. To be more specific, while Landman‘s humor is more obviously funny due to Billy Bob Thornton’s sharp wit in every episode, Jason Bateman’s understated humor manages to lighten even the bleakest scenes in Ozark. On a broader note, both shows are set in lesser-known regions of the American South and make skillful use of their locations. Furthermore, the characters Marty and Tommy, although distinct, have striking similarities when they find themselves in over their heads and grappling with immense stress.

Ozark’s Crime Story Is Much Darker Than Landman

Ozark Is So Grim It Makes Landman Look Like A Romantic Comedy

While Ozark does have its humorous scenes, they sometimes feel unintentional due to the show’s heavy emphasis on darkness and gloominess. By the end of Ozark season 4, Marty’s family has disintegrated under the weight of his criminal lifestyle, numerous innocent lives have been lost, and the characters in Ozark have committed truly heinous acts. Each episode seems like a continuation of the final episodes of Breaking Bad or The Sopranos, where the consequences of the main characters’ actions began to catch up with them in a series of tragic, ironic twists. From start to finish, Ozark is a harrowing exploration of crime’s brutal impact.

Contrasting the two, Landman appears more cheerful in comparison. Although season 1 of Landman does have its share of gloomy episodes, such as Gallino’s arrival and the numerous accidents at the oil rigs, none can truly compete with the intensity found in Ozark.

What sets Landman apart is that it is more explicitly a comedy-thriller, and a significant aspect of its charm lies in how Tommy skillfully alleviates dramatic tension through his witty humor.

The most striking difference between the series lies in their family stories: whereas Tommy works to reunite his family and initiate healing in Landman, Marty deliberately dismantles his family in Ozark.

Although there’s still some uncertainty, it seems that the second season of Landman could potentially delve deeper into a grittier narrative, as Tommy finds himself in more challenging predicaments than before. This includes working side-by-side with the cartel instead of attempting to steer clear of them. Furthermore, the mounting pressure from his job is likely to create friction within his family dynamics, especially with Angela (Ali Larter) and Ainsley (Michelle Randolph). The character of Cooper (Jacob Lofland) will also become a direct rival to Tommy and M-Tex, adding even more complications. Given the intense nature of Ozark, it’s plausible that watching it could provide an ideal introduction or comparison for the upcoming season 2 of Landman.
