In terms of exploring fresh movies through your Netflix subscription, experiences may range from discovering originals that are truly captivating to those that are clearly not worth watching. Among the 2025 Netflix releases, there was a deeply touching and popular film called “Nonnas”, released just this month, along with “The Life List” and “The Electric State” earlier this year. These received mixed reviews from critics versus viewers. However, an anticipated new horror movie has unfortunately been receiving almost unanimous negative feedback.
Fear Street: Prom Queen Has A Really Low Rotten Tomatoes Score
The “Fear Street” book collection, authored by R.L. Stine, who’s also known for his “Goosebumps” works, has been captivating young adult readers since 1989. In 2021, Netflix brought the series to life in a three-part movie adaptation, which was met with widespread acclaim by both critics and viewers. However, the most recent addition to the trilogy seems to be receiving mixed reviews.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, a platform that combines critic reviews and audience ratings into a score, with a perfect 100% indicating a masterpiece and the 2019 film “Cats” scoring a mere 19%, has classified “Fear Street: Prom Queen” as “Rotten”. The Tomatometer score, based on 38 reviews from critics, stands at 32%, while the Popcornmeter score, derived from audience ratings, is at 36%.
According to reviews on RT, IGN finds the acting as rather rigid, ComicBook criticizes it for lacking depth compared to previous installments, and RogerEbert.com labels it as mindless.
And Yet, It’s Already No. 1 On Netflix
It’s quite disappointing, given that our review of “Fear Street Part 3: 1666” praised it for wrapping up the series well with a score of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Yet surprisingly, despite the negative buzz surrounding “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” it’s garnering significant viewership in its opening weekend. In fact, it currently holds the top spot among U.S. movies on the streaming platform.
The film unfolds in 1988 at Shadyside High during Prom night, when an enigmatic masked murderer starts hunting potential prom queens on the evening of the grand ball. While most roles go to fresh new faces, Ariana Greenblatt (famous for her Barbie roles), Lili Taylor, and Katherine Waterston are part of the cast.
The statistics indicate that many people are eagerly anticipating the new Fear Street movie, but it’s probable that few will be left particularly impressed after viewing it. When the trailer initially dropped, we spotted an Easter egg linking back to the trilogy, however, the film produced last spring has a distinct set of creatives working on it, and it doesn’t seem to measure up to its predecessors in the same way.
However, you can reach your own verdict on this matter by watching the horror flick on Netflix.
