‘Bahut neeche girane ki koshish…’: Kapkapiii actor Tusshar Kapoor admits harsh judgments about looks almost crushed him

In more recent times, nepotism has been a widely discussed issue in Bollywood. However, back then, actors from film families didn’t face as much intense scrutiny from the public eye. In a recent interview, Tusshar Kapoor looked back on his initial years in the industry and revealed that some people tried to sabotage his career journey and even sought to bring him down.

Tusshar Kapoor on facing harsh criticism over his looks

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Tusshar Kapoor looked back on his Bollywood debut with Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai in 2001. He admitted that although the discussion about nepotism wasn’t as prevalent at the time, it was starting to emerge.

He pointed out that, growing up in a movie-making family, he frequently faced increased scrutiny from certain parts of the media, who seemed to analyze everything with great skepticism. He emphasized that it was crucial to cultivate a tough exterior in such surroundings because there were persistent efforts to undermine him.

In his early times, a specific part of the media was frequently harsh towards star kids, appearing to relentlessly search for imperfections in their actions. Tusshar noted that if one appeared at a press event with a natural appearance, without makeup or styling, the criticism would be “they weren’t fit enough to be seen as heroes.

Reflecting on his journey as an actor in Kapkapii, he acknowledged feeling grateful for having the determination to endure criticism and maintain focus on his profession. Looking back at the premiere of his first film, Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, he emphasized that its success significantly boosted his motivation.

If the pressure had been any greater, he acknowledged, it might have proven too much for him. He made it clear that joining the film industry wasn’t about fulfilling anyone else’s expectations, but rather a battle against continual evaluation and obstruction. Yet, he underscored that the audience is always genuine and impartial, as they assess actors solely on their screen performances.

Kapoor argued against the common notion that children of famous actors have an effortless path in the movie industry. He made it clear that just because someone is the child of a celebrity, it doesn’t automatically mean they will have a trouble-free experience. Although he conceded that getting a debut film might be somewhat simpler for star kids, he stressed that this chance is not always guaranteed.

After finishing that movie and the professional choices made afterwards, there’s a lot of uncertainty. He emphasized that ongoing criticism and the recurring mindset that “there’s never enough” are hurdles that many child actors often need to overcome and surpass.
