George R.R. Martin responds quite frankly to fans who are upset about the undisclosed release date of his book, “The Winds of Winter.
The author has been working on the A Song of Ice and Fire novel for at least 15 years.
Martin has faced various reactions like “wrap up the book, George”, some of which can be quite harsh (implying that he may not live to complete his epic “Game of Thrones” series, encompassing both “Winds” and a concluding novel, “A Dream of Spring”).
Martin has already encountered numerous responses such as “hurry up and finish the book, George”, some of which can be rather unkind (predicting that he might not survive to complete his “Game of Thrones” sequence, consisting of “Winds” and a final volume, “A Dream of Spring”).
On Wednesday, the writer delved into the news from last week’s Hollywood Reporter about an upcoming adult animated feature film. This movie is an adaptation of Howard Waldrop’s novella, “A Dozen Tough Jobs.” It has been confirmed that Martin will be the producer for this project, which is a modern retelling of the Twelve Labors of Hercules. The script will be written by Joe R. Lansdale, known for his work on “Bubba Ho-Tep.” This film marks the fourth time Martin has produced a short film based on one of Waldrop’s stories.
Every time Martin shares news about a new project that isn’t Winds, there’s often disappointment from some online viewers who wish Winds was still being completed. In response, Martin proactively shared a firm statement together with the movie update.
Martin expressed in his writing: “I understand your frustration, as it seems to arise whenever I discuss something other than Westeros or The Winds of Winter. Many of you have lost faith in me or the book’s completion, and I can’t help but feel that I’ll never be able to finish The Winds or A Dream of Spring. If I do manage to complete them, they likely won’t meet your expectations. I often consider handing over the task to another writer… Frankly, I’m getting quite old, and I fear my days are numbered. My passion for A Song of Ice and Fire faded decades ago, and writing no longer holds any excitement for me. I mostly just spend my money now. I also edit the Wild Cards books, but I know you’re not fond of them. In fact, you may dislike everything else I’ve ever written, including the Hugo-winning and Hugo-losing works like ‘A Song for Lya’ and Dying of the Light, ‘Sandkings’ and Beauty and the Beast, ‘This Tower of Ashes’ and ‘The Stone City’, Old Mars and Old Venus, Rogues and Warriors, Dangerous Women, and all the other anthologies I edited with Gardner Dozois. Clearly, you’re only interested in The Winds of Winter, as you’ve made that clear to me on numerous occasions.
Martin went on to say, “You see, I truly feel for them all – Westeros, the Winds of Winter, the Starks, Lannisters, Targaryens, Tyrion, Asha, Dany, Daenerys, dragons, direwolves. I care deeply about each and every one of them more than you might think.
Martin expressed his enthusiasm for the Waldrop adaptation, saying, “I wish everyone could share my anticipation for this film.
Interestingly enough, we’re currently immersed in an era overflowing with content related to ‘Thrones’, especially on television. HBO is actively developing a third series titled ‘House of the Dragon‘, which even garnered some candid comments from Martin himself earlier. Additionally, they are launching the first season of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ as well.
