Film director Hansal Mehta, famed for movies such as Shahid and Citylights, has advocated for a thorough examination into patterns of predatory conduct and abusive behavior by influential figures in the industry, following allegations against cinematographer Pratik Shah. In a lengthy post on X (previously Twitter), Mehta underscored the significance of responsibility and requested an investigation. He further highlighted that victims should not be forced to bear their suffering in isolation.
In a recent post, Hansal Mehta stated, “Silence allows abuse to grow. It breeds in apprehension. It’s crucial to thoroughly examine allegations of predatory behavior by individuals in powerful roles, and if proven true, to address them swiftly and unequivocally. For far too long, predators have exploited their influence, privilege, and fear to mute victims. This vicious cycle must be disrupted.

Mehta stressed that the misuse of power isn’t exclusive to one gender, as women in positions of authority have unfortunately contributed to harm too. He clarified that abuse doesn’t only present itself as sexual, but it can also take shape in mental, emotional, and psychological forms, all of which can be equally destructive.
Mehta went on to say that harmful actions in creative settings are frequently disguised as ‘passion’ or ‘genius,’ a mindset he thinks needs to change. He strongly emphasized that no artistic endeavor, be it a movie, script, or any other project, is valuable enough to jeopardize an individual’s safety or mental health.
The message continued, “It’s crucial that victims are heard. They require justice and a responsive system. A system that listens and takes action is essential. Accountability isn’t about canceling cultures; it’s about correcting them. It’s our responsibility, for ourselves and future generations, to ensure our environments are safer, cleaner, and more compassionate. Expose the predators, expose the repeat offenders, and hold them responsible. No power should be exempt from decency.
Currently, Dharma Productions has spoken up about the allegations, emphasizing that they have a strict no-tolerance policy for any form of inappropriate behavior or sexual harassment within their productions. They handle such matters with great gravity and importance.
It’s been made clear that Pratik Shah was employed temporarily as a freelancer for the movie Homebound. His involvement in the production has since concluded. While he was working on the set, the internal POSH committee did not receive any complaints from the Homebound cast or crew regarding Pratik.
I’ve chosen to temporarily step back from my Instagram presence due to recent unverified claims circulating online. As of now, I haven’t released any official statement regarding these allegations.
This way, it sounds more personal and relatable from the first person perspective. The original sentence was a bit distant and impersonal.
Shah served as the director of photography for the movie “Homebound,” which was the only Indian feature film presented at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. This production, helmed by Neeraj Ghaywan, was developed under the production house of Karan Johar, known as Dharma Productions.
