For approximately 10 years now, Tim Miller unveiled the initial trailer for Deadpool at San Diego Comic-Con, leaving fans clamoring for a replay and igniting a highly prosperous series.
Currently, the director responsible for creating two critically-acclaimed adult animated shows, Love Death + Robots on Netflix and Secret Level on Amazon Prime, is now preparing to reenter the world of superheroes.
Or simply:
The director behind the success of Love Death + Robots (Netflix) and Secret Level (Prime Video) is readying himself for a return to the superhero genre.
During a conversation about the latest season of his Netflix series, The Hollywood Reporter inquired about Miller’s strategies for rejuvenating the superhero genre, marking the anniversary of Deadpool’s groundbreaking impact on it.
Miller expressed that he believes Marvel has a hidden advantage yet to be revealed, and that’s the entire X-Men universe – something that initially drew him into comics. He considers the X-Men his favorite characters and wrote to Marvel executive Kevin Feige, expressing his wish to work on an X-Men project in the Marvel Universe if given the chance. At Fox, he was developing an X-Men movie based on issue 143, which combined elements of ‘Home Alone’ and ‘Alien’.
In a slight deviation from the topic at hand, Miller mentions, “However, should DC eventually tackle The Authority, that’s my all-time favorite comic – it’s like the Justice League but with lethal actions. I believe there’s still much unexplored terrain [in this genre], numerous stories yet to be told.
Miller expressed his enthusiasm for the latest Marvel production, “Thunderbolts,” which garnered positive critiques yet faced some challenges at the box office. He found the movie exceptional, praising Florence Pugh’s performance and noting that all the actors delivered remarkably well. The action was also commendable, as it felt realistic and well-grounded. In summary, he appreciated how thematically consistent the film was, commenting on how such coherence often goes unnoticed but significantly contributes to a deeply satisfying viewing experience. (It’s worth mentioning that the director of “Thunderbolts,” Jake Schreier, is in discussions to direct Marvel’s initial — and likely not last — X-Men project.)
Inquire about whether he believes he receives adequate recognition these days for initiating the Deadpool franchise, especially considering its successful third installment, Deadpool & Wolverine, from last year, and Miller responds affirmatively.
As a fortunate and grateful individual, I acknowledge that I’ve received more than my due share of recognition for the projects I’ve been involved in. I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot as the luckiest geek on Earth. I have no reason to complain, and Ryan Reynolds truly outshone himself. I never anticipated having a studio of my own, let alone working on a feature film, especially one as successful as Deadpool, or contributing to Terminator: Dark Fate. Though Dark Fate didn’t initially meet financial expectations, it has turned a profit now. And then, the opportunity to work on Love Death + Robots, which I consider my most significant accomplishment yet, came along. To top it off, despite my age, I’m far from done creating and contributing to the world of entertainment.
