Rekha’s Umrao Jaan gears up for re-release, set to clash with Kajol’s mytho-horror flick Maa

The trend of remaking films isn’t likely to disappear any time soon! The timeless classic “Umrao Jaan,” starring the captivating Bollywood actress Rekha, is slated for another big-screen appearance. This iconic movie has been upgraded to 4K quality by the film institutions, National Film Archive of India (NFAI) and National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). Known as one of the greatest Hindi films ever made, “Umrao Jaan” is preparing for its cinema comeback on June 27th. However, this re-release isn’t going to be an easy ride at the box office as it will encounter a significant competition.

Under the direction of Muzaffar Ali, the enduring classic Umrao Jaan is preparing for a showdown with Kajol’s mythological-horror drama, Maa. Umrao Jaan might be re-released on select screenings, but it seems that Maa will dominate many screens due to its wide release. Remarkably, both films honor women in distinct genres. It promises to be a delight for cinema enthusiasts to enjoy two female-centric movies in one day.

This version aims to maintain the original’s clarity while using simpler language and sentence structures that are easier to read and understand.

For those unfamiliar, the film “Kajol’s Maa” is helmed by director Vishal Furia and co-produced by Ajay Devgn and Kumar Mangat Pathak. This horror flick is positioned within the Shaitaan universe, which could potentially draw audiences and provide it with an edge over competing releases.

Contrastingly, Umrao Jaan carries a rich heritage in artistic filmmaking, with its melodiously written songs frequently trending on Instagram. With its lead actress Rekha, this production may resonate strongly with contemporary audiences and become the next big thing on social networking platforms.

1981 saw the debut of Umrao Jaan, a film where Farooq Shaikh portrays Umrao’s romantic interest opposite Rekha, who plays the title character – a 19th-century courtesan-poetess from Lucknow. The cast also includes Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Shaukat Kaifi, Dina Pathak, Satish Shah among others. The movie delves into the themes of love, sorrow, and yearning experienced by Umrao.

Umrao Jaan was an enormous success upon its debut, leaving an indelible impression on film enthusiasts thanks to Khayyam’s timeless soundtrack. Rekha’s unforgettable portrayal in the movie earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress. Furthermore, it boasts a collection of poignant songs such as “Dil Cheez Kya Hai,” “In Aankhon Ki Masti,” and others that continue to resonate.

4K remastered, the classic film Umrao Jaan is set for a modern-day re-release under PVR Inox’s Timeless Classics program. This program has previously brought back some iconic films from Bollywood.
