‘Beetlejuice’ Returning to Broadway for Third Run

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice is returning to Broadway for the third time.

Beginning on October 8, 2024, “Beetlejuice The Musical” will make its first national tour at The Palace Theatre for a thirteen-week run ending on January 3, 2026. Interestingly, this marks the third time the musical returns to Broadway, which is somewhat uncommon given that its two previous Broadway appearances were within the past five years. This unusual return can be attributed to the production’s rocky journey thus far.

The musical first debuted at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre in April 2019, but it struggled with low ticket sales until things began to pick up due to buzz on social media and a strong performance at the Tonys. However, theater owners decided to evict the show by June 2020 to make way for “The Music Man” starring Hugh Jackman. These plans were postponed due to the pandemic, but producers have stated that “Beetlejuice” has left Broadway and is preparing to return, fueled by the success of the show and the popularity of its cast recording.

After a stint away, “Beetlejuice” made its comeback on Broadway, specifically at the Marquis Theatre, from April 2022 until January 2023. A large portion of the original Broadway cast returned, with Alex Brightman reprising his role as the main character. Unfortunately, despite the return of familiar faces, the musical didn’t quite manage to recapture the energy it had prior to the pandemic and ended its run prematurely.

Following the release of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the sequel to the 1988 film, this fall, it set the second-best September box office launch in history. Warner Bros., who produced the film, also produces its Broadway adaptation.

Casting for the Broadway engagement has not yet been announced.

The debut tour of this musical across the nation kicked off in December 2022, marking its final performance on Broadway. Additionally, performances of the show have taken place in Tokyo, Seoul, Melbourne, and soon in Sydney as well.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the stage adaptation of the Tim Burton classic, Beetlejuice, is directed by none other than Tony Award winner Alex Timbers, best known for Moulin Rouge! The music is crafted by Eddie Perfect, who also made waves with King Kong. Scott Brown and Anthony King are responsible for the script, while Connor Gallagher brings his choreographic magic to the table.

The show’s run is a part of a recent industry trend where national tours visit Broadway first, such as ‘The Wiz’, which will be staged at the Marquis Theatre from April to August 2024, before other theaters.

The Palace Theatre, where “Glengarry Glen Ross” featuring stars like Kieran Culkin, Bill Burr, and Bob Odenkirk is currently playing (and will close on June 28), gets taken over by “Beetlejuice”.
