Criminal Minds: Evolution carries forward the BAU team’s adventures in the 2025 TV lineup, maintaining the emotional depth and high-stakes tension found in the original series. Yet, there are significant departures from its predecessor – for instance, it incorporates explicit language due to its streaming availability on Paramount+, and concentrates on a single unsub throughout an entire season. However, some aspects remain consistent, such as Garcia’s knack for flirting during stressful moments, which I greatly admire in Kirsten Vangsness‘ portrayal of the character.
People who have watched all 18 seasons of “Criminal Minds” are aware that Penelope Garcia, portrayed by Paget Brewster, often engages in playful flirtation. This is particularly evident with Shemar Moore’s character Derek Morgan, whom she fondly called “baby girl.” However, it should be noted that this banter was not of a serious nature and was directed at many characters, including Luke (Adam Rodriguez) and Tyler (RJ Hatanaka). In an interview with TV Insider, Brewster discussed the flirtatious nature of Garcia’s character, offering an insightful perspective.
This current run is brimming with intensity, spanning across ten thrilling episodes. It seems we’re savoring every moment, filling the gaps between scenes with imaginative tales of our own. The narrative is overflowing with events, and if you recall, the previous season saw Garcia becoming more self-assured. Now, she’s attempting to blend romance with friendship, and vice versa. With her busy schedule, there’s scarcely a moment for leisure, but Garcia, ever the charmer, will surely find opportunities for some playful flirtation here and there.
Garcia is recognized for maintaining a cheerful atmosphere, be it in her playful interactions or by adorning her workspace with vibrant colors and trinkets. Due to the limitations of one season on Evolution, her flirtatious behavior when opportunities arise showcases her ease and affection towards her coworkers (which might extend beyond platonic feelings, but let’s save that topic for another time).
There’s no denying that “Criminal Minds” has been shrouded in a lot of gloominess lately, what with the turmoil surrounding Voit, BAU-gate, and Will’s tragic demise. It’s tough to maintain a cheerful demeanor amidst all this, but Garcia’s flirting antics ensure there’s at least one ray of sunshine in our day. I truly hope she continues, as it’s these moments that make her endearing and charming.

On Paramount Plus, you can stream “Criminal Minds” and its sequel, “Criminal Minds: Evolution”, for as low as $7.99 a month or $79.99 a year. If you’d like an ad-free experience along with Showtime content, opt for the Premium plan at $12.99 per month. Check out the deal now!
On Criminal Minds, Garcia has found herself in a tricky romantic situation, as she’s essentially dating both Tyler and Luke. It remains uncertain if either relationship will lead somewhere, but fans have been eagerly anticipating the possibility of Garvez becoming a reality. As Season 18 unfolds, viewers can only speculate about their future. With Season 19 now confirmed, I’m excited to witness how these dynamics develop over time.
For now, viewers can keep anticipating Garcia’s charming banter, as it often lightens even the gloomiest episodes. Given that Criminal Minds: Evolution is slightly darker than its predecessor, some lighter moments are particularly beneficial.
New episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution drop on Thursdays on Paramount+.
