For several decades, the distinctive red Gibson guitar that Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) used at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance in Back to the Future has gone missing. It’s yet unknown if the Gibson ES-345 guitar managed to travel aboard a DeLorean.
In an attempt to track down the guitar, Gibson is appealing to fans to aid in finding the instrument famously played by Marty McFly in the unforgettable scene from the 1985 film “Back to the Future,” directed by Robert Zemeckis. The brand has initiated a search for the guitar that Marty strummed as he performed Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” It is revealed that the guitar mysteriously disappeared 40 years ago during the production of Back to the Future Part II, and Gibson Films is creating a documentary about this quest for the missing guitar, which they have named Lost to the Future.
The film “Lost to the Future” will delve into the influence of the movie, particularly Marty McFly’s guitar solo, and it will include performances by Chris Martin from Coldplay and musician John Mayer. This documentary will comprise extensive conversations with Robert Zemeckis, the director, and Bob Gale, the co-writer, as well as Lea Thompson and Harry Waters Jr., who portrayed Chuck Berry in the movie.
The “Lost to the Future” documentary was created by Doc Crotzer and corresponds with the 40th anniversary of the classic movie “Back to the Future”. In the promotional clip, Christopher Lloyd (the actor who portrayed Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown) can be heard saying, “This guitar has been misplaced in time.” Fox explains, “Either it’s hidden within the intricacies of the space-time continuum or it’s tucked away in someone’s garage.
Crotzer stated, “This film sparked my dream of becoming a filmmaker, and the moment inspired me to learn how to play the guitar for the first time. Speaking to fans of music, movies, and true-crime documentaries, I invite you all on our incredible, unbelievable journey to discover the Excalibur of our generation.
The Guitar Solo Meant A Lot To Michael J. Fox
Fox additionally shared some insights about the red Gibson. “Music has always played a significant role in my life. During our discussions regarding the Enchantment Under the Sea scene, I suggested to the cinematographer and choreographer that I’d like to showcase various iconic guitar moves, such as mimicking Jimi Hendrix’s move behind his head, Pete Townshend’s windmill, and Eddie Van Halen’s hammer-on technique. It was fantastic that they were receptive to this idea, and we ended up incorporating all of these elements into the scene.
Fox expressed that during the filming of the scene, he had no idea how much of an impact it would have on future musicians. He shared, “I’m delighted with the scene as it encapsulated my passion for the guitar and all the amazing artists. I wasn’t aware that the scene held such influence over people. John Mayer commented, ‘I play guitar because of you,’ and Chris Martin echoed those words, making me proud. They took it a step further than I did by becoming exceptional guitarists. I simply love the guitar and the movie.” Fox stated.
Gibson has established a hotline, and individuals with details about the guitar can make a call to share their information.
