Although Richard Karn held the position as one of several hosts for Family Feud before Steve Harvey’s lengthy tenure, he is mostly known for his eight-season stint as Al Borland, the television handyman who donned flannel, on Home Improvement. Fans continue to demand a reboot of this popular sitcom, with aspirations that Al could have a son in future episodes.
Should this backstory of Karn’s character ever be revealed, it could potentially feel like a complete journey for him, the actor himself hinting to People magazine that the primary motivation behind his portrayal of Tim Taylor’s less accident-prone sidekick was deeply personal.
Although I pursued acting instead of construction like my father and grandfather, their influence in the field of building was evident in my life. In some sense, we all embody our parents, and I believe that a significant part of my character as Al was shaped by my dad.
It’s clear that Al Borland’s character development on “Home Improvement” aligns well with this perspective: He was generally nurturing and understanding, but occasionally showed firmness or frustration. Even though Tim wasn’t actually his child, there were instances when Tim acted immaturely. Furthermore, Al’s parenting decisions were not always beyond reproach.
The portrayal of Al Borland on “Home Improvement” is consistent with this interpretation: He was mostly kind and supportive, while occasionally displaying sternness or irritation. Despite the fact that Tim wasn’t his real son, there were moments when Tim exhibited childish behavior. Additionally, Al’s parenting judgments weren’t always perfect.
If Mark had been Al’s child instead, it seems unlikely that his goth storyline would have unfolded as it did. However, the idea of seeing Karn dressed up in a The Crow cosplay now has me quite intrigued!
To put it simply, Richard Karn stated that he not only portrayed his own father in the role of Al, but his father was also a fan of this character. He mentioned that his dad “really enjoyed the show,” and furthermore, the actor seemed to indicate the highest form of parental approval by suggesting that this is probably the kind of criticism his father would give: the praise.
1) He found it amusing. One of the nicest things he said about me was, “You truly seem experienced in what you’re handling.” That was quite an impressive comment. (Informal and conversational)
2) He thought it was humorous. One of the kind words he spoke to me was, “You genuinely appear competent in your work.” That was a significant praise. (Formal and slightly more formal)
It’s clear that standing beside a character as eccentric as Tim Taylor makes anyone appear incredibly competent. However, his argument holds water. Being praised by someone who served as inspiration for a role is significant in itself, but I imagine the emotional impact must be intensified when that source of inspiration is none other than one’s cherished parent.
If “Home Improvement” were to make a comeback on television and present us with the next generation of its well-known characters, it would be thrilling to witness Karn’s actual son taking over the role of Al’s child, thus maintaining the legacy of paternal guidance.
In a heartwarming nod to the profound impact Al Borland had on many viewers, take a look at this video featuring a youthful hockey enthusiast teasingly quoting Al’s most frequently used catchphrase in honor of Tim Allen.
