Two years following his supposed demise depicted in 2019, Keanu Reeves‘ character, the renowned assassin John Wick, reappears in the initial spinoff of the franchise titled “Ballerina.” As another spinoff commences filming, series creator Chad Stahelski hints at whether fans might catch a glimpse of John Wick in the upcoming installment.
In a comprehensive chat, Stahelski discussed the upcoming spinoff of John Wick: Chapter 4, titled Caine, focusing on Donnie Yen‘s character, assassin Caine. When inquired about Keanu Reeves’ involvement in the spinoff, Stahelski hinted, “The Caine spinoff doesn’t feature the John Wick persona. Instead, it showcases Donnie Yen and pays homage to martial arts films. If John Wick 1 was reminiscent of Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin, this one is more akin to Chow Yun-fat, John Woo, and Wong Kar-wai.
Contrary to John Wick’s demise in Chapter 4, he is set to return as the beloved assassin in the upcoming film Ballerina, given that it takes place prior to the events of the 2023 action movie. However, during the early stages of Ballerina’s creation, the timing of the spinoff wouldn’t have made a significant difference because, as Chad Stahelski shared with THR, Keanu Reeves was initially not intended to feature in the film.
Originally, what we added wasn’t part of the initial plan. To be straightforward, I had reservations about it. However, I could see the advantage and we felt compelled to assist director Len Wiseman. We were fresh off the release of John Wick 4 which was a massive success. He couldn’t return to the low-budget approach of the first John Wick and try to rebuild from scratch. To keep up in the same league, he needed a boost. So, from the studio perspective, the most straightforward way to provide that assistance was by incorporating Wick into Ballerina within a separate timeline.
Caine Spinoff Is Set After John Wick: Chapter 4
In the future, it’s possible that Wick’s death may be written off in some way, paving the way for Keanu Reeves to continue appearing in the series. The upcoming installment in this shared universe is titled “Caine“. Filming is expected to start in Hong Kong later this year. Although specifics about the plot are being kept secret, it’s believed that the spinoff will pick up where “Chapter 4“‘s post-credits scene ended, with Akira pursuing revenge for her father’s death by tracking down Caine. Both Donnie Yen and Chad Stahelski are involved in the project, with the latter also serving as director. Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on “Terminator: Dark Fate” and the upcoming “The Batman Part II“, is penning the script for “Caine“.
In a recent statement, Adam Fogelson, head of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, shared his excitement about the return of Rina to the John Wick franchise. He mentioned that characters like Caine and Akira have incomplete matters, and the next installment will undoubtedly be filled with intense action as these stories continue.
Caine does not yet have a release date, while Ballerina opens in theaters tomorrow, June 6.
