Originating from American Greetings greeting card company by Elena Kucharik, the Care Bears started as mascot-style characters designed to embellish various greeting cards and stationery. Their distinctive appearance was partly crafted by Muriel Fahrion, a co-creator of Strawberry Shortcake, who was among the first artists to conceptualize the franchise. In 1983, the world got acquainted with the Care Bears through a variety of plush dolls and other merchandise, two years after their initial creation.
The Care Bears Debuted in 1983
That very same year, the Care Bears first appeared on television screens in the syndicated animated special titled “The Care Bears in a World Without Emotions“. Produced by Atkinson Film-Arts, this special quickly became beloved among young audiences, paving the way for another special called “The Care Bears versus The Freeze Machine“, which was released in 1984. The following year, their memorable cast graced the big screen with “The Care Bears Movie“, a success that solidified the franchise’s presence within popular culture.
1985’s “The Care Bears Movie” was a significant hit, earning more than $34 million at the box office while only costing $2 million to produce. This early success paved the way for the later success of the “Care Bears” animated series when it premiered that year and eventually led to nine additional animated films in subsequent years.
The world of Care Bears has expanded over the years to include various comic books, board games, video games, and a plethora of related merchandise. In 2024, it was revealed that Care Bears would team up with another ’80s icon, Strawberry Shortcake, in a brand-new TV special titled “The Care Berry Switch”. This collaboration is being spearheaded by WildBrain Studios and Cloudco Entertainment, who oversee the respective Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake franchises.
