The initial Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film set for release in 2025, titled Captain America: Brave New World, contained an unexpected use of a strong profanity that was unnoticed until the movie’s online premiere. Over the 17-year lifespan of the predominantly PG-13 rated MCU, the use of such language has been a point of discussion, but more recently, the inclusion of previously taboo curse words has become more commonplace.
In the beginning of Captain America: New World, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, played by Harrison Ford, unexpectedly used a strong profanity. This is one of the rare instances (either explicitly spoken or implied) of this term in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, excluding its R-rated series, which have gained attention during the Multiverse Saga.
In the video that welcomed fans back to Ford, they introduced the new president, Ross, who is stepping into the position following the late William Hurt. A scene from a press conference showed a Ross with his mustache, visibly upset as he confronted the media.
In a scene where there is no audio, it appears that he mouths the question, “Does anyone else have any ridiculous queries?” before abruptly knocking over the podium. This moment seems to be Captain America 4‘s potential usage of the F-word, which aligns with its PG-13 rating.
The upcoming movie “Captain America: Brave New World,” which is almost the last film of Phase 5 for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, focuses on Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson and his first solo adventure. Joining him are Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Setaph, and Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader. In this fourth Captain America film, Sam Wilson must rebuild the Avengers while battling physically and strategically against Harrison Ford’s character, President Ross. You can now stream “Captain America 4” on Disney+.
Other Notable F-Bombs in Marvel Studios’ History
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there have been quite a few memorable moments when the ‘F-bomb’ was skillfully deployed to delight fans.
One of the most notable instances in this endeavor was the 2024 movie, “Deadpool & Wolverine“, where the word was used an impressive 118 times throughout its 2 hours and 10 minutes. Almost every actor had a chance to use it on-screen, but Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Wade Wilson, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, and even Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm stood out in their frequent usage.
In contrast, it was “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” from 2023 that earned the distinction of being the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production to feature an uncensored F-word. After years of attempts, Chris Pratt’s character, Peter Quill, successfully integrated the profanity into the film, directing Nebula to “open the damn door” following his assistance in figuring out the car door handle.
In the world of Disney+ series, shows such as Moon Knight and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law have occasionally come close to saying a particular word once each. Other films like Iron Man 2 have masked that word with beeps, while Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War edited their dialogues or scenes to avoid using it.
Moving ahead, it appears the Marvel Cinematic Universe is eagerly embracing mature storylines. Several R-rated productions are under consideration, and even a follow-up to the much-anticipated collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine is being deliberated internally. This should merely be the beginning of more adult-oriented tales in the MCU.
