This upcoming film, titled “Ballerina” (originally marketed as being from the same world as “John Wick”), is a spin-off of one of the most acclaimed action movie series in recent times. Consequently, it carries quite a heavy burden of expectation. However, director Len Wiseman and screenwriter Shay Hatten, who collaborated on “John Wick: Chapter 3” and “Chapter 4”, don’t aim to match that standard. Instead, they focus on introducing a new character, with actress Ana de Armas bringing her to life.
Undeniably, Wiseman immerses himself in the vivid, gritty, and action-packed realm of “John Wick“. Indeed, the almost legendary figure of “Baba Yaga” (Keanu Reeves) graces the screen. However, despite aligning with the franchise’s signature style, imaginative universe, and exceptional fight sequences, “Ballerina” transcends being just a generic imitation. In much the same way as its vengeance-driven heroine, the movie possesses a distinct taste that allows it to make an impact within this clearly defined universe.

In the story, De Armas portrays Eve Macarro, a deadly assassin driven by revenge. As a young girl, she saw her father being killed by an enigmatic cult. This traumatic event led her to be adopted by The Director (Anjelica Huston), a powerful crime boss who leads the New York branch of the Ruska Roma. Over time, The Director guided Eve in harnessing her grief. Eventually, she was turned into one of The Director’s ‘ballerinas,’ secretly highly-skilled assassins.
In the course of honoring a commitment, a recollection surfaces for Eve upon coming across a band of assassins branded with the same emblem as the men who slain her father. She seeks guidance from the Director, only to be sternly advised to forget it. However, Eve remains resolute and follows a path strewn with corpses that ultimately guides her to a secretive figurehead called the Chancellor (Gabriel Byrne). Yet their realm is governed by laws. And in defying these regulations, Eve finds herself both pursuer and pursued.
In the latest addition, we see several new characters emerge, such as Norman Reedus playing an on-the-run assassin and Byrne portraying a formidable villain. However, none compare to Ana de Armas who impressively holds her ground as both an action heroine and leading character in the John Wick series. Additionally, we’re pleased to see familiar faces like Ian McShane as Winston, the mysterious yet charming owner of the New York Continental Hotel, the late Lance Reddick as Charon, the dedicated concierge at the Continental and a trusted ally to Winston, and of course, John Wick himself.

If you love the John Wick film series, you’ll be delighted to hear that “Ballerina” continues the franchise’s elaborate lore. It delivers on all fronts, from intriguing locations, hidden underworld rules, and an eclectic cast of characters, to the signature high-energy, heart-racing action scenes. Just like John Wick, de Armas engages in various combat scenarios, employing a diverse arsenal of weapons such as bullets, axes, ice skates, and fire. Essentially, she uses whatever tool comes her way.
