Instead of providing starting characters, Elden Ring Nightreign introduces eight fully developed playable characters, each with their individual weapon expertise and skills. These characters’ abilities can be adjusted on the fly as players discover new weapons and upgrades throughout gameplay, although their overall build tends to remain consistent. Fortunately, these Nightfarers are a key aspect of Elden Ring Nightreign, as each character exudes a unique identity shaped by both major and subtle details. One particularly impactful detail could be beneficial for future FromSoftware action-RPGs.

For instance, Wylder, Ironeye, and Executor share a swift dodge roll, suggesting they are all nimble and agile. Conversely, the Raider, despite sharing the same dodge animation, seems to perform it more slowly, hinting at a larger build and heavier armor that may hinder its movement.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but marvel at the distinct dodging maneuver of the Eagle-headed Sentinel. Instead of squaring off directly with an adversary, it gracefully slips beneath an enemy’s assault, weaving to one side and taking a subtle step back. However, when players press the shield button while dodging, the Sentinel adopts a more deliberate, rigid side-step. This steadfast movement underscores the Sentinel’s unwavering commitment to defensive strategies above all else.

At the other extreme is the Recluse from Elden Ring Nightreign, who gracefully hovers above the battlefield as she dodges, suggesting her exceptional skill with magic. Known as the Duchess in Nightreign, she boasts the quickest dodge animation, a more agile and expansive version of the Guardian’s side-step. The Duchess is capable of executing two consecutive dodges, the second one resulting in a flip if aimed backward. Her swift and acrobatic dodge animations underscore the character’s speed and agility.
