In his upcoming film, Disney’s Jacob Tremblay will portray a role based on the infamous Unabomber. Previously, Tremblay has been featured in Disney and Pixar’s movie ‘Luca’ and the live-action version of ‘The Little Mermaid’.
Discussing the upcoming production of “The True Story of the Unabomber,” formerly known as UNABOM, which centers around Ted Kaczynski’s life. Jesse Tremblay plays the younger version of Kaczynski, with Shailene Woodley (from The Descendants) and Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders) also featured in the cast. Janus Metz, known for All the Old Knives, will be directing based on a script penned by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves of Sleepy Hollow. As of now, filming is taking place, and Netflix has hinted that they’ll announce the official release date soon.
The UNABOM tale revolves around a young individual who progressively feels alienated from society, leading him to resort to violence as an outlet, according to Metz’s statement in the Netflix press release. The narrative weaves together two different periods: the creation of the Unabomber and the apprehension of the Unabomber.
The director of the UNABOM movie discussed his admiration for how suitable he believes Jacob Tremblay is for the chilling lead role. He stated, “Jacob Tremblay showcases remarkable acting talent at such a young age. His delicate demeanor seems perfectly suited to my interpretation of Ted as a student at Harvard. There’s an element of vulnerability and intelligence in Jacob that this story requires. After our initial conversation, I was certain he was ideal for the part, and it has been truly enjoyable collaborating with him to develop the character.
Metz found the Unabomber case, which cost the FBI the most time and money they had ever spent on an operation, intriguing. However, what truly captivated him was the account of Ted Kaczynski’s years at Harvard as a young mathematics student. This aspect of the story was new to him; it sheds light on a particularly dark period in our history.
Tremblay’s New Role as the Unabomber Contrasts Previous Disney Works
The UNABOM series is based on genuine incidents and Netflix portrays it as chronicling the journey of Ted Kaczynski from a brilliant Harvard student into the notorious Unabomber. After being exposed to questionable psychological tests by Professor Henry Murray (portrayed by Crowe), his troubled past re-emerges years later, triggering a manhunt led by FBI agent Joanna Miller (Woodley). This story unveils the chilling implications of ambition and solitude.
Transitioning into the character of Kaczynski marks a change from Tremblay’s past performances. Notably, he has played a child with Treacher Collins syndrome in the 2017 drama “Wonder” and an innocent sixth grader in the 2019 comedy “Good Boys”. Comic book enthusiasts will recognize him as the voice of Damian Wayne/Robin in the “Harley Quinn” series, created by Max. He also played the main character in Disney/Pixar’s “Luca” and provided the voice for Flounder alongside Halle Bailey.
An official release date for Netflix’s UNABOM has not been announced at this time.
